All,
----------------------------------------I have the BOINC Manager in "Autostart" under WinXP and want it to just start without any window opening, i.e. disappear to SysTray at once. Is there a silent start option for BOINC Manager? Thanks so much, Jens

Think you can add /s to the shortcut, the s for silent. Not sure if it is case sensitive, so try.
----------------------------------------Confirmed: The shortcut path would look like "C:\program files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe" /s

okay good.
----------------------------------------I've put a little FAQ together since it came up a few times. It includes, after some research, that BOINC can be started sans icon and without the need to install as a service. Tested and confirmed to allow the launching and exiting of BOINCmgr leaving the core client running in background. cheers

re your FAQ
----------------------------------------"C:\PROGRAM FILES\BOINC\BOINCmgr.exe" /s Caveat: It only works if the shortcut is set to open in a normal window. On Max or Min it will do that instead! I have just looked at the properties of the shortcut which was automatically created at installation. It reads as you state in the quote with the exception that it is set to run minimized which I thought was what was requested in this thread. I have also found that BOINC can be run in a cmd window by running boinc.exe. Since this process is non GUI, does it run any faster? ![]() Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

I have also found that BOINC can be run in a cmd window by running boinc.exe. Since this process is non GUI, does it run any faster? Depends on what you want. BOINC by itself doesn't do much in the way of crunching, so whether or not it runs any faster doesn't really matter much to most of us. BOINC Manager is just a graphical interface, giving you the chance to give commands to boinc.exe by clicking buttons, links and other options. You can give all those same commands from the command line to boinc.exe, either by starting boinc.exe with the commands, or by using boinccmd.exe with extra commands. So think, would that speed anything up? No. BOINC is the managing program. WCG has the science applications that do the actual crunching. If you want to speed anything up, you should start there...

coolstream, minimised isn't the same as reduced to the systray (more accurately termed the notification area). When minimised, BOINC Manager is still visible in the taskbar, like any other minimised application. Reduced to the systray, BOINC Manager is only accessible through the systray icon.
