Hi all!
I use a Intel Core2 Quad 4GB Ram on Vista.... I was see I can configure that BOINC only calculate in "Idle" or calculate everytime with a % ammount... IS there a way configure BOINC when Idle use 4 CPUs@100% and when somebody start use the PC Boinc throttle back to 2 CPUs@100% ? Andreas |

The calculation run at "Low" priority. This is effective, and
----------------------------------------the calculation can slow your computer only indirectly such as with much use of swap memory. So my suggestion is to run at 100% always on all processors; if this is what you prefer. ![]() ![]() |

Hi Schunken,
----------------------------------------It's been put on the Berkeley developers wish list in different variations: 1. Better smoothing of the % Overall CPU time, 2. % of total CPU cores (processors), use / idle 3. I've forgotten, but there was a 3rd way people wished... ah yes, point 1, with different percent during use / idle. I've recently started to use Process Lasso utility on Vista. It works a dream and I don't know BOINC is running, 4 cores 100%. It's got some fancy 'responsiveness' control feature and mine went up from barely to totally unnoticeable. Works on most all windows platforms.

2. % of total CPU cores (processors), use / idle This is already an option in BOINC 6.

2. % of total CPU cores (processors), use / idle This is already an option in BOINC 6. Different % of Use and Idle e.g 75% on 4 core takes 3 cores and 50% during idle takes 2 cores.... hmmm where do I see this in 6.2.2. alpha? I'm not a fan of that change from explicitly saying X processors and now a %, so how does 87.5% work on a 4 core? Sometimes 3, sometimes 4?

The option in 6 is within the combination of these three options:
----------------------------------------On multiprocessors, use at most 16 processors On multiprocessors, use at most 100 % of the processors Use at most 100 percent of CPU time The middle one being the one you're looking for. It won't let you say when they go Idle though. Perhaps in a future version.

There are four BOINC profiles, default/home/school/work. Within each profile, accessed from the device manager, there is also a memory usage parameter:
----------------------------------------Use no more than: [ ]% of memory while computer in use Use no more than: [ ]% of memory while computer idle Mine are set to 100% 100% Each device can select one of the four profiles.

Soon someone will come up with the luminescent idea to run the profile "Work" when using the computer and run profile "Home" when being the couch potato (off-topic, not sure if that is greenhouse neutral :O). Of course what is considered Home and Work is for each to decide on it's own.

Soon someone will come up with the luminescent idea I've run BOINC with that brilliant idea for a while, but that no longer works. It worked with 3.xx, but since 4.xx it no longer works.

Some time ago I had the great surprise to discover that the Wheel was old, but not as old as I thought it to be. Was 'Invented' in multiple places at different times of human cultural (r)evolution.
----------------------------------------Would not work at WCG with different sub-projects attached to each. In the morning RICE, in the afternoon "but I did not choose that project" default. Would have to be thought through very carefully before ever a similar re-implementation.
