Does the new BOINC software not display pictures of proteins?

Re: screensaver graphics

Hello nl93252,
For which project and which OS? We are updating the projects to use the new BOINC 6 graphics API, which is backwards compatible with the current BOINC 5. I'll take a stab and say yes.

Re: screensaver graphics

I'll assume you mean HPF2 ?

It takes a while sometimes to be displayed for this project.

Re: screensaver graphics

Then I'll ask the 6 dollar question (inflation): How did you install BOINC? As a single user, shared user or service install?

Single User: The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager works only for you. The BOINC screensaver shows application graphics only for you (other users can run the screensaver but will see textual information only).

Shared User: The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager works only for this user. The BOINC screensaver shows application graphics only for this user (other users can run the screensaver but will see textual information only).

Service: The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager will not work for any user. The BOINC screensaver will only show textual information. (Unless you use this workaround.)

Your video card may not support OpenGL by default, in this case try to update the drivers and DirectX 9.0c version. (In Windows, the standard drivers on many video cards do not support OpenGL).

Re: screensaver graphics

I did install BOINC for Single User and run HPF2 on WinXP SP2.
When I select Show Graphics a window opens and shows a nice graphic, but my screensaver shows only text.

From Ageless post: "The BOINC screensaver shows application graphics only for you (other users can run the screensaver but will see textual information only).

Did you install under the same user as the one wanting to view the screensaver and if so, did you allow enough time? If video ram is insufficient you might also incur and blank screen, not sure if a text is offered instead when that's the case.

Rob, OpenGL runs in as little as 2MB of video memory.

If the drivers aren't up-to-date though, it is a different story. When using the standard Windows drivers, even though it recognized your video card correctly, it won't do OpenGL. One needs the video card manufacturer drivers for that.

But, since the graphics work it must be something else. Possibly a setting set wrong or the video card just won't run OpenGL screen savers. That's also possible.

It's also possible it's one of those incompatibility problems between BOINC and some video cards. Hopefully that one is solved with BOINC 6.

Am I the only one to use the IBM standard ThinkPad T41 for HPF2? If this can display OpenGL graphics but not run a OpenGL Screensaver, that must be something known. B.t.w. The screensaver does not have may settings.

The screen saver has its settings under the OS. In Windows, go Properties of the display->Screen saver->BOINC

Make sure the "Password protected" option is not checked (this causes most problems with BOINC and only works if you use this workaround.
Other options to set can be done trough Settings.

Unchecking the password option works, but the workaround does not work.
