Lets not kid ourselves.... how well multi threaded is W98SE? It needs frequent booting to keep some system stability. When IT put W2K on my laptop & desktop, it was really Good Riddens and a breath of air by comparison (a strip of extra ram really made it fly)

There have been some improvements to stability of W98 since MS dropped support. Repaired Kernel32 and shell32 dlls are now available from non-microsoft sources. These were seemingly left 'as is flakey' by MS intentionally, possibly to encourage OS migration to 'Millenium' (remember that one?). Later OS bundles actually built on NT.
I don't notice signifigantly greater stability in W2K or XP, once those two issues are addressed, providing that the SW and hardware employed is of a suitable vintage. The latter two flavours now have the advantage of being able to employ the massive hardware resources (RAM etc) that have become physically possible, and which MS software has always been addicted to. A W98 dependency on BOINC installer revision has been reported in another thread.
http://tinyurl.com/4opalo Apparently the newest rev recommended for w98 is: boinc_5.8.16_windows_intelx86.exe This older revision is being applied with previos issues re system freezing, processor throttling and effective suspension from keyboard activity. RL |

The last Three Tasks to my computer Bionic thave ended in a C+ error. Could you please: 1. Give the whole error message? 2. Tell us your BOINC version? 3. Tell us your Operating system? 4. Give us an excerpt of the error messages from the Messages tab, as of when it happens? You should still be able to find the error in Event Viewer. Start->(Settings->)Control Panel->Administrative tools->Event viewer. Look for a message called Application pop-up, else it's showing as either an error or a warning.

I believe the standard cure for C++ runtime errors for WCG BOINCinstallations, at this time, is to disable the screensaver.

The revision dependancy is discounted - the FAQ is incorrect. Errors in 5.8 that involved suspension and user preferences were corrected to produce the current release, and everything is peachy keen.
