Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

Hey there,

Since I upgraded my Boinc to 5.10.xx, my system repeatedly hangs up. It doesn't react to ctrl-alt-delete, the mouse is not working, I have to do a reboot using the reset button.
I am running on an AMD Athlon, with 2 GB memory. Before I upgraded, everything was running smoothly. Unfortunately, the system I'm running BOINC on is also my network & HTTP-server, forcing me to uninstall the BOINC manager.
Is it possible to download & use earlier (STABLE) versions of BOINC?

Cheers,
Bufiku

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

You can get earlier versions from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

However, blaming BOINC may be premature. There should be no way BOINC can directly hang your system - BOINC isn't a privileged process. However, BOINC can reveal weaknesses in your system that hadn't previously shown themselves.

Please will you help us narrow this down by giving some extra information? Operating system, security software, any recent upgrades to software or hardware.

If you use Windows, there may be a crash report logged that can help.

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

Hello
Thanks for your quick reply. Can't say I am always that quick...

I am running Windows 2000 Pro, Symantec Client firewall & antivirus, Sambar as a HTTP-server, zFTP as an FTP-client.
The computer is running on an ASUS A7V8X motherboard with an Athlong processor & 2 GB memory. It is running on normal speed, no overclocking whatsoever. I use the onboard VGA & network.

I've experienced this problem first when I upgraded the BOINC client. After uninstalling everything worked again. Then I re-installed: Problems. After a second Uninstall everything went OK, so I went back to my old UD-installation. This worked fine for about a week, but then I found the email they send me suggesting that I should upgrade to BOINC. So I did, and the problems occured again. This is the only software change I actively initiated (although the Windows, Symantec and zFTP software is configured to update daily - I don't check regularly if they keep themselves to this)

It might be that BOINC is discovering another problem, but for me this machine should work 24/7, as it did last two years. So for me the easiest is not to investigate, but to keep everything as stable as it was...

About the windows crash report - I don't think I will find them, as the system freezes - it doesn't crash. But if you suggest a location where I should look for these reports, and an email address to where I can send them if I find them, I'll have a look.

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

Hello Lucie a Jan-Willem,
From your description, it sounds as though you only ran UD, not BOINC, before. Is this correct? Were you running any of the BOINC graphics functions when it froze? Do you still have a BOINC directory containing a copy of the Messages file stdoutdae.txt? What sort of Athlon processor do you have (I assume single-core)?

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

Hello Lawrence,

I started several years ago with the UD agent. Somewhere autumn 2007 I changed to the BOINC client, and the problems started with the one of the latest upgrades (5.10.45): The 15th of may I've upgraded from 5.10.30 to 5.10.45, and that's when my problems started.

To answer your questions: I was not running any graphics, I've disabled the screensaver functionality (as I want this server to power down the screen asap), and it's a single core Athlon.
I do have a file stdoutdae.txt, starting from nov 2007. Do you want me to send it or post it somewhere?

Cheers
Jan-Willem

Did downgrading to 5.10.30 solve your problem?

I'm very doubtful that the log file will help in this case.

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

Hmm, just wondering that it might have a different cause as well: When upgrading the client, I also added some other projects. With the downgrading, I only selected World Community Grid.

I downgraded to 5.8.16, as that was the only other release I could find on http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php.

I'll try to upgrade once more to the newest release, selecting only World Community Grid, and I'll post what happens.

Cheers

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

Hi Rob,

Indeed, my name is Dutch, and so am I. Still, I'm supporting the Czech team, as my wife, who is Czech, pointed me towards UD.

Anyway, I've been running version 5.10.45 for over 48 hours now, so I think the problem lies in the adding of new projects. I'll add a new project regularly (starting with Malariacontrol) and I'll keep you informed with the results.

Thanks for all the quick responses: this was the main reason for me to continue with Boinc!

Cheers,
Jan-Willem

Re: Latest version of BOINC causes system to hang

After changing over to BOINC this afternoon (previously UD), this machine has frozen three times. Symptoms as described by Lucie second time. Only user operations at the time were text editing/messaging/file management. Function loss gradual in other two cases, with keyboard reboot possible only in last instance.

In each case the BOINC client messages window after reboot shows only processes from the current start-up. I scanned harddrives etc. BOINC is the only SW change in 30 days of daily use.

This is a w98 2ed OS on a sempron 2200 MB running at 1..8GHz. The installer rev was 5.10.45.

Perhaps there is a separate thread for OS rev issues or should I just uninstall BOINC and go away?
