BOINC loses some work done. Isn't saving work?

I am runing the BOINC client 5.10.45 on a windows XP Sp2 machine.

I notice when i shut down and restart later, the work completed percentage is 2 to 5 % lower than when I stopped.

Is the program not saving work often enough? Can this be adjusted or fixed so we dont lose already finished work??

This is normal, and unavoidable. The FAQ suggests some workarounds for those few people who find this a problem.

But if you don't turn your computer off too frequently, and you have a reasonably fast computer, then the loss isn't significant. Most people don't need to worry about it.

Hi Azeeker,

Yes, if shutting down just before the periodic checkpoint you could loose a few percentage points on resume. It depends on the project and also how many segments are packed in a job.

Visit the Start Here forum Checkpoint Saving FAQ to learn how to identify the checkpoints in the graphics or through activating the checkpoint message logging.

Thanks for the quick replies..

I have tried to find the Checkpoint FAQ but cannot locate it.

Can you give me a link?

The website is pretty big and hard to find things..

Sek, the link to the graphic for ACH appears to be broken at this point. uplinger may be using a different site to host that particular graphic?

Re: BOINC loses some work done. Isn't saving work?

Azeeker,
In the Checkpoint FAQ do not miss the paragraph about the "Write to disk interval (WTDI)" if you run projects other than DDDT and Rice. For those two, they checkpoint frequently enough for your actual checkpoint to be taken soon after the WTDI is elapsed. But for other projects with longer checkpointing intervals, if you set the WTDI too high it may happen that your WU wants to checkpoint just before the WTDI allows it and in that case this checkpoint opportunity is simply lost, leading to an actual checkpointing interval twice longer than it could be.

If you do not run highly disk intensive applications in your normal activity my personal recommendation would be to keep the WTDI at its default 60-second value.

Cheers. Jean.
