Almost all my projects (or all my projects after a certain date) have been shown as "Error" instead of "Valid" (which they were at the start), the message being:
<core_client_version>5.10.45</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> too many normally harmless exit(s) </message> ]]> Please help! |

Okay, that is the job log. Can you post us a good piece of the message log of that computer. You find them in the stdoutdae.txt file which is located in the BOINC data directory.
----------------------------------------http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16342 'Normally' they occur if there are time-keeping issues on a computer. A few can be recovered from. Many are considered enough to decide that there is no point to continue. Any security software changes / updates and what are the makers?

You have a DLL initialization error.
(I stated the obvious, there.) |

I'm afraid that tells me very little. What do I need to do to stop it from occurring?

The second line that repeats is
----------------------------------------"If this happens repeatedly you may need to reboot your computer." Did you do that? Booting on Windows machines in particular works wonders (well sort of).

Well, I've rebooted and switched off/on my PC plenty of times, but that didn't stop the Errors.
My results are Valid, Pending Validation or In Progress now, but the Error period was quite a long one and seemingly unaffected by me turning the PC on and off, so I'm still keen to learn how to prevent something like that from happening again in the future. |

We've never been actually been able to narrow it down. Given that an occasional DLL cleaning session often produces oodles of the identical libs of different versions and dates, never so sure if the right DLL is being loaded or, if timeouts during booting prevent them from loading. I've set BOINC with an Automatic boot delay (Vista), so it is not trying to load stuff when half the system is still not up.

Oh, interesting, and how would I go about doing that (setting the automatic delay up)?

In Vista, (re)install BOINC as Service, visit the Admin Services.msc applet, open properties and change "Automatic" to "Automatic With Delay". Maybe Windows 2008 Workstation has the option too, but XP has not.
----------------------------------------Read of some running a boot up script to control the order of loading applications and services during boot up, but never bothered with that. I've had the DLL load once or twice and at all times the system was extremely busy doing other stuff. Maybe your security software interferes.... that is a very usual suspect?
