So, i am going to ask a newbie question, even though I am old, but I have been away for a long time, and to ask in the tech forum would inevitably lead to jibs and jabs :) So, I came back because I got a new Apple iMac, Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache: 4 MB Memory: 3 GB Bus Speed: 800 MHz Memory: 3 GB I run WCG on BOINC @100% when i am not using my system. When I was last an active member on windows on a much older system, running at 100% caused me major problems, now it seems consensus on BOINC w/ a Mac is 100% should be just fine. Do you all agree? Just want to make sure I can both contribute, and not have any system failures like in the past. Happy Crunching!!!! Yep, I have never noticed any problems running BOINC even on my old P4. I've always had it at 100%. Your C2D is a hair faster than my C2Ds and has more memory. Unless you're running something extremely intense like CAD programs or the latest high end games, should have nothing to worry about. Yup. Keith got it right. Just some words of caution: Since that's an Apple. And Apple's are expensive. WCG runs your CPU at 100% load. That decreases the lifespan of your E6600 CPU chip drastically by a few years. Don't know how long you want it to last though. :P Also since summer time is here. Keep that chip under 55 C for safe measures. 60.1 C is max temperature. Crunch on!Hey Blizzie, do you know what the life expectancy of a q6600 is running 100% 24/7? How much does that hurt the life expectancy? If I'm not mistaken. CPUs are designed to run for 10 years straight (not 100%). Overclocking it decreases it's lifespan by a few years and 100% 24/7 adds to it. Maybe your Quad will last 4-5 years; maybe more? It's just a GUESS. Since C2D and C2Q have not been out for that long. The overclocked C2Ds since they were released have not started dying yet. You won't have to worry. :P Everything will be outdated before your Quad dies. It's just a precaution to throw out there.. You know, scare some people? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 15, 2008 8:03:42 PM] |

@ Keith: When you have a chance, can you open a MOT team at The Lattice Project http://boinc.umiacs.umd.edu/ and Hydrogen@Home http://hydrogenathome.org/ ? I could not find a MOT there. EDIT: Also QMC@Home http://qah.uni-muenster.de/ MOT team. MOT's combined BOINC Stat's are looking good at 12.5 million. I was suprised to see we are 293. (But falling )Thanks!! ![]() Okay, we're at Proteins, Lattice and QMC now. I also dumped Predictor a while back and replaced it with MilkyWay (Predictor seems to have a highly vocal anti-admin group, Don't know the history, don't care to. Plus the move of the project to U. Mich. seemed very poorly handled to me. Better safe than sorry.) Hydrogen looks good but need to look at it some more. They say they're not affiliated with any research group or university. Looks like the head is part of some think tank. Not sure if this is some for profit thing or what (it's alpha now too I thought) . I'll take another look at it. I need to update our thread header too. Thanks Keith!! Made the move to Lattice and QMC ... hydrogen seems to be tanked at the moment (not an unusual occurence ) Will move when it comes back. I've not run predictor.Well thanks again. Not much will happen 'till the fall. I use the low end machines for work outside of WCG and POEM ... and they are all sleeping peacfully now with dreams of cooler weather. BTW: Quad prices are falling quickly ... saw a Q6600 at Amazon for under $850 ... hummm ... food, gas and beer or a replacement for a P4 ... ![]() Cheap quad for less than $500. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Searc...pNo=3901251&CatId=333 Here's a crazy cheap quad completely assembled! If you're looking for cheapness, skip Dell, Alienware, HP, Compaq, and IBM (lenovo?) and go straight to the little guys. No overhead plus complete control over your systems is awesome in my view. However, they do often use garbage parts (look at the MOBOs!). http://www.portatech.com/catalog/viewitem.asp?ID=25351&O=25461&cm=9 |

Gerald -- Been in pretty bad shape here as well, but it looks like ny problems are nearly over. Bandages off my leg and just a bunch of dead skin to come off and I should be as good as new. Hope you are better sooner than it has been for me. Now that's good news ... keep on keepin' on, Dave. ![]() ![]() |

G'day folks, its been a while since i've been here so I figured i'd check in.
Winters set in down here in Perth, and its been raining regularly the past week. I love waking up to the sound of rain, but not so much the getting out of the warm bed into the cold world. Having said that, judging by some of the recent posts of you lot in the US, its seems mildly warm on that side of the world.. I'm also at university now, so my free time has been painfully sucked up by that. Although right now I'm enjoying a month and a half holiday before the next semester .. A hello also to all the fresh new faces of MOT!Take care everyone. Marc. |
