angry bad beginning...

i've download this software... i've installed it... i begins to hate it...

the client connects to the server, downloads 4-5 megabytes of 'something' to the install directory, then _deletes_ all downloaded & says that it's paused! then, after a time, it repeats this procedure!

i've noticed it, when i saw 40 megabytes of traffic generated by the program...

can anybody explain this for me?

p.s. sorry for my english

Hi Chups,

Start by reading the System Requirements at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/system_requirements.html

If you meet the requirements, including virtual memory (200 MB used by the WCGrid_Rosetta.exe program alone, which was the major part of your download) then read about ‘Agent Paused’ at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/agent_paused.html which is part of the Trouble Shooting series of pages, beginning at:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/troubleshooting.html

If that does not help, then read about these problems in the Known Issues forum:
1) Another reason for a paused agent
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1297
2) Agent communicates with server frequently
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1883

Still puzzled? Then read about problems caused by security software in the ‘Start Here’ forum:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1804

If you have solved the problem, then go back to the ‘Start Here’ forum and read ‘How do I open the World Community Grid agent and what’s there?’ at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1442

If nothing helps, then post on this thread again. This time describe your computer and Operating System and tell us your firewall and anti-virus program, your connection (Proxy? Router? Corporate network?) and the type of computer.

Best Wishes,
Lawrence

Re: bad beginning...

Would this sequence be appropriate anytime a person was having an installation problem, or only the kind that Chubs reported?

In either case, I've already boodmarked it.

Thanks, once again.

Re: bad beginning...

Hi Chups,
Please don't worry about the about the large download when starting on the World Community Grid. The first download is about 4.5Mb and contains the housekeeping data for the HPF task that is currently running on the World Community Grid such as the Graphics etc. Subsequent downloads should be smaller just over 1Mb per work unit. The only time you will see another large download is when Rick Alther, the IBM Software developer, releases an update to the the agent software or a new project begins on the World Community Grid.

The repeating download over and over is usually caused by an interaction with an anti virus product you are running ( I think Microsoft have just released a patch for XP SP2 to cure some problems with AntiVirus scanners and program execution)

Post back and let us know how you get on.

All the best

Dave

confused Re: bad beginning...

Chups,
Your statistics show 7 results in 7 seconds, averaging 1 result per second on 24 and 25 Feb 2005. I am unsure just what is going wrong, but more information would help. You are running Windows XP SP2. Could you tell us how you are connected? What security programs are running on your computer? More about your computer? Does Task Manager show ud.exe and ud_126863.exe running as processes? What sort of virtual memory usage do you have?

rRe: bad beginning...

well... the list of files in my %ProgramFiles%\WorldCommunityGrid directory:

  • cs.ud
  • UD.EXE
  • ud_83701.scr
  • ud_126863.gz.sig
  • ud_126864.dll
  • ud_711384
  • UDAGENT.HLP
  • udtapi.dll

last time the client for some reason didn't delete some of downloaded files...
when i run ud.exe, it shows status 'Preparing to send results to Grid server...' what results?...
then... the only security program - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 4.5... (well, plus Windows Firewall, but i don't think that he could affect code execution... :))
i have about 700 megabytes of free virtual memory...
what else do you want to know?
p.s. can i get installed client? i want to join the common work :)

cool Re: bad beginning...

Chups,
The biggest difference that I note between your directory and mine (aside from no work unit) is that instead of ud_126863.gz.sig, I have ud_126863.exe listed as 2,798,530 bytes when I right click on it and select Properties. What on earth is gz.sig and where does it come from? Are you sure you do not have some security program trying to prevent viruses from installing on your machine? If changing this on your program does not work, then try sending a ‘Contact Us’ email with full details to the World Community Grid using the ‘Contact Us’ at the bottom of the web page. They may be familiar with this problem. It is not one that I have seen before.

Lawrence

Added: 'Contact Us' is no longer at the bottom in Forums, but if you switch to 'My Grid' it is at the bottom. Sorry, we are changing the look to make things more useful, but I have trouble keeping up with the changes.
