How about the admins create a sticky post in the New Members Forum with some of their accumulated knowledge that would help explain a few of the intricacies of the WCG.
We must keep in mind that as the number of members increases we reach deeper into the population of non-computer literate users, but who are still anxious to help the worthy cause. My wife would probably not use a computer except it is required for her work, and so continues to harp that the computer should be as easy to use as a toaster. :) Anyway, the sticky should contain info concerning the 3 week clock limit and 2 week CPU limit per WU. I think this is important for newbies to understand because many may come onboard thinking any 5 minute interval they can contribute per day (week? month?) is useful. When in reality they are only wasting their time, and the WCG's time, unless they can contribute an hour or more a day. Nothing in my 82 year old dad's life has led him to have an inherent understanding of the WCG project's need to complete a "work unit". Ideally this would be on the WCG's home web page itself, but I don't see that happening, regretfully. It should explain how the WU's are assigned and reassigned. It should explain the clients commit technique that allows the client to easily restart where it left off. It should also explain how to cancel a WU. It should explain how often the client communicates to the grid server. An explanation for how a WU's percent completion can seemingly speed up or slow down. Maybe a quick glossary for terms and abbreviations used (ie WU=work unit). Maybe a few links to important threads about point calculations, etc. An answer to what the different color envelops (orange/blue) in the forums mean. I don't know that myself ... what do they mean? Plus whatever else they see as helping reduce the forums duplicate questions. Finally ... have I overlooked the fact there is already a sticky post like what I'm suggesting? If so ... it would only prove my point that newbies would have a hard time finding answers. John |

A few of us have wanted sticky posts too, but by the time we would "stick" all of the useful information, there would probably be a few pages of stickies to go through before you would get to anything new. In light of this, we try to put items like you are looking for in the "Start Here: Community-maintained FAQs [read only]" threads. The technical staff at the World Community Grid is also looking at providing more of this type of information in the web pages as well. |

Hi, “jr”. I recently brought up your same basic concerns regarding “accessibility” in a post to the forum. The administrators suggested that I contact WCG Technical Staff directly. I did, along with an offer to donate some of my own professional team member/friends time to help work on it.
The following is their very pleasant and informative response. I am posting it in the hope that it might help all of us to understand the logistical difficulty they face which makes implementing changes take much longer than any of us (especially Tech Support) would like. “Thank you for your offer of assistance, particularly with the Agent Install Process. We are aware of the difficulties many people have with installing the software. Unfortunately, the software is from a different vendor and we do not have the source code ourselves, and thus cannot make quick changes to it. However, we have made a list of requests for improving the install process and other items known to the vendor so that the next version of this software could incorporate them to the extent possible. “This update process is very slow, as you might imagine, and is subject to prioritizations of various kinds, technical, security, testing and reliability requirements. Unfortunately, we cannot make direct use of [your team’s offer] to work on the software. However, it would be helpful and much appreciated if you could send us, in the form of suggestions, a specific list of improvements you would like to see [implemented]. We can then include any we might have missed in our requests to the software vendor. “Thank you for participating.” worldcommunitygrid/Armonk/IBM@IBMUS (It's just too bad that we can't get hold of the source code ourselves. What problems? Sighhh.) |

Hippocrates,
Just tossing in my two cents worth. 'Stickies' are part of the forum software. If you look at the bottom of the page, you will see that we are running mvnForum RC3. RC4 has just come out 04 February 2005. If you go exploring, you will find that one of 21 new features in RC4 is 'sticky' threads. I have no idea when we will upgrade, or what use we will make of the new features. Just remember, face the future with a smile! {Grin} Lawrence |

We are working on making the Help/Troubleshooting section of the site more accessible, prominent, and easier to use. We will (or already have) included your suggestions in our revamped help section. We are hoping to have the additional FAQs, recategorization of existing help, and other features available near the end of March or early April. Thanks for your suggestions, and keep on crunching!
