yes that's what I was thinking, but I can't find where it's being stopped, especially as other work downloads are ok. Thanks for your help, I'll keep digging.

running Windows firewall and NAV, stopped them both, still no joy. I'll keep trying

is there anythng you have to set to associate my PC's Bonic with the WCG server, or to refresh the connection

One of the keys is to allow BOINC.exe to connect outwards over port 80 and 443 (only WCG uses that, which is why the exception). Port 80 is default, but 443 is probably not and NAV does give me a nervous twitch on the left eye ;). Look in the Windows event viewer or the NAV logs for anything that got auto blocked.
