Fine, computers are obviously not my forte.
In fact, I do not even know what a proxy setting is/does. To date my computer has already completed one task and is currently working on another. It would be nice to be able to upload it. All I know is that I have a cable modem and I am not networking. If I go to "Connections" and select "Set Up" a nice looking Wizard appears. But I do not have a clue as to what to do with it (assuming, that is, that this is where I am supposed to proceed from). Thanks in advance for any assistance. |

Thanks, Billy Bob. Did you know that because I was assigned another task? One more question, if you don't mind.
When I first fired up the connection I had not read all the supporting documentation. Since then I have created a Team, changed my Log-In name and also allocated more hard drive space. However, none of these changes are reflected in the "Grid Agent" box that allows me to monitor the progress that is located in the icon tray. I also do not see any indication that the first project has been uploaded anywhere in the "Statistics" area. What do I need to do to make the changes take effect? A quick disclaimer. I really have spent a good deal of time trying to find the answers/solutions on my own. It is a lack of expertise, not a lack of effort on my part, that forces me to ask for assistance. I would really prefer to have answered these questions on my own. Thanks again for the help. |

Hippocrates,
Where to start? First, proxy servers are maintained by corporations to protect their corporate networks and interface with the Internet. This is something you do not need to worry about unless you have a System Manager to query. So, forget about proxies. Next, your Agent only communicates with the WCG to upload results, then downloads a new Work Unit. When you get a new Work Unit, the Member Information box on your Agent updates the total number of points you have earned and the total hours of computer run time. This only happens after the server acknowledges receipt of the results. So if these numbers have changed, your results have been sent. The server also maintains all this information. Once a day, at midnight Greenwich Mean Time (7 PM EST) the server adds up new totals for each member and publishes web pages containing these new statistics on Akamai (a business with a lot of servers for displaying web pages on the Internet). So by half an hour after midnight GMT you can see these statistics as of the previous day using your web browser. Incidentally, the server rounds up though your local Agent rounds down, so each work unit can result in a 1 point difference in score. Profiles are a bit more difficult. There are 2 main points. First, the profile is maintained on the server and can only be accessed by using your password. People without your password cannot change your profile as a joke, the way they could if the Agent accepted changes directly from the keyboard. But this means that the profile is downloaded with each Work Unit, to be used with that Unit. The Agent will show the profile for the current work unit, even after you have changed it on the web site. Changes to your profile will only show up with the next work unit. Second, establishing a new profile can be a 2 step process. You always start out with 'default' as your profile. You can create a new named profile but then you have a second step to do. You must use the drop down menu to assign that named profile to your device. Then the Agent will show the new profile on its next download. If you forget this step, the Agent will continue to show 'default'. I hope this covers the essentials. Lawrence |

Thanks for taking the time, Lawrence. Everything was clear as a bell.
My only remaining question is: I increased the "allocated hard drive storage" on my Device Profile but this is not reflected on the Agent's "Device Information". Do I need to do anything else to make this change effective, or will the server take care of this automatically? Thanks, once again. |

Hippocrates,
Bring up your Agent, click on the check mark to switch to the Preferences view, then look at the Device Profile area to see the Profile Name with the Max Storage under it. If that is not what you want, then use your browser to go to the World Community Grid site and go to Member Area – Device Manager – Device Profile. Click on the desired profile name and look at ‘hard drive space to allocate’. That should be the same as on the Agent. Then use the drop down menu to change the storage authorization to what you want it to be. Then click on ‘save’ at the bottom. This is the step that I and many others forgot. This changes the device profile on the server. It will change on your Agent with the next Work Unit. Since this is a change to a profile already assigned to your computer (device) you do not need to do the assignment step. Hope this gets you crunching. Lawrence |
