Is there a way to get Vista to stop blocking the Agent as a startup program.
Also, how can I avoid corrupting data if I forget to suspend calculation before logging off or shutting down? |

1. Install BOINC as a service. That does not need the BOINCmgr to start the core client. It starts the service even before you log in.
----------------------------------------2. Visit the Vista FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856 Point 1 explains where to install to avoid the job corruption.

Many thanks people.
I'll try the suggestions when I get a minute Why can't Vista be as uncomplicated as Linux - where I have encountered no such problems? |

Why can't Vista be as uncomplicated as Linux - where I have encountered no such problems? Because it is made by Microsoft. |

1. Install BOINC as a service. That does not need the BOINCmgr to start the core client. It starts the service even before you log in. I'm pretty knowledgeable about computers, but I don't know how to install a regular program as a service. Can you point me to instructions on how to do that? I've got the same problem of Vista's overly paranoid Defender preventing BOINC from running on startup. |

Maybe a case of "Eyes Wide Shut". Reinstall BOINC. There are 3 options service, single user, shared being offered during that process.
----------------------------------------And while at it, for the knowledgeable, BOINC Service by default uses Automatic starting. In the Vista Service.msc the BOINC service properties you can change this from Automatic to "Automatic with Delay" (translated from Italian). This speeds up booting and allows other system services to start first. The Vista FAQ in the Start Here forum has more tricks to improve like installation to C:\ProgramData\BOINC. That is the standard for all BOINC data files from version 6 for Vista. Oh, and from version 6 there will only be a Service install i.e. no options to install differently. ttyl

Oh, and from version 6 there will only be a Service install i.e. no options to install differently. Only on Windows NT, 2000, XP and Vista. Windows 98, SE and ME will not use the service install, but they don't get an option either. Just to say that it will still work on Windows 98 and above as well.

Just to say that it will still work on Windows 98 and above as well. So technically, it's auto-detect. Excellent.
