Re: Why is WCG port scanning

This isn't World Community Grid - it is the datacenter doing route optimisation. It is normal, and nothing to worry about.

It's explained in the help: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn#78

Re: Why is WCG port scanning

Hi Mark,

knreed posted about the same question a while back (there might even be a "Help" item on it).... can't find it momentarily but it is something with a periodic quality of service check by the provider to facilitate optimal routing. Dont know if it works on my net, but beyond the router my LAN is "INVISIBLY STEALTHED".

cheers

Re: Why is WCG port scanning

I understand the need to optimize routing, however doing it via port scans in the 50k+ port range is not a way I have ever seen before.

The firewall is doing it's job, it just concerns me why this traffic is happening.

Thanks!

Re: Why is WCG port scanning

Rung a bell... in my firewall permitted BOINC to use a random port in the range 50000-56xxx for LAN traffic. Also set up a rule for only the IP addresses of projects to which I'm attached to get thru to BOINC.... anyone else trying finds the door welded shut.
