BOINC on Linux: libXcomposite.so.1 ???

Hi folks,

I installed BOINC 5.10.45 on a RHEL according to the step-by step-manual. When I try to run BOINC from the command line, I get the following message:

"error while loading shared libraries: libXcomposite.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".

??? Any ideas??? Where can I get this libXcomposite.so.1?

Thanks for your help!

Re: BOINC on Linux: libXcomposite.so.1 ???

It's part of the shared libs for X. Does that system have a GUI?

Mine shows up in

[kathryn@Galaxy ~]$ locate libXcomposite.so.1
/usr/lib/libXcomposite.so.1
/usr/lib/libXcomposite.so.1.0.0

Re: BOINC on Linux: libXcomposite.so.1 ???

Hi,

googled and found only 1 hit of BOINC associated with the missing file.

http://www.sg-speg.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=...65dc036566a7ba871224fe482

From what is understood here on Live-Fedora, the core client (daemon) runs okay, it's just the BOINCmgr GUI barfing and a new build of "the package" needing to be compiled since the OS distro is seemingly not.

https://www.linux-foundation.org/dbadmin/brow...e&Lname=libXcomposite

Nowadays with the endless Linux flavours, the developers only test for Ubuntu.

Not much help i suppose how to get the missing object.

Hi,

you are right. The client runs properly, but the graphical manager doesn't like to. This is obviously a known issue for non ubuntu users :-(.

Thanks!

(bump) I had the same problem setting up a Darn Small Linux box. The Boinc Australia Wiki DSL instructions mention using version 5.4.11 or earlier. That manager does not use the libXcomposite library. You can download specific versions of the BOINC client from Berkeley.

Re: BOINC on Linux: libXcomposite.so.1 ???

The posts above were helpful...

I have RHEL5, and found running this on my system downloaded the needed library...

sudo yum install libComposite

the current version downloaded from WCG runs fine now, UI too.
