I started this morning dutifully running the upgrade to my UD / Boinc agent software. However the installation kept complaining about not being able to find the .msi file. I had Windows XP run a search – found it in the \Windows\Downloaded Installations folder – but even when I browsed to the file the installation kept insisting it was in the wrong folder. The folder that the installation referred to was different than the current location of the boinc.msi file – but the folder that was being referenced was not a sub-folder of my Downloaded Installations folder.
I then decided to would attempt a clean install and tried to uninstall the Boinc software via Add / Remove programs. But this procedure also attempted to reference the boinc.msi file in the phantom directory. Then I got annoyed – and yes I had my usual 2 cups of coffee so I have only myself to blame – I searched the registry and removed all references to both Boinc and the UD agents. Restarted the machine (by this time I have restarted several times) and ran the installation again. This is when I received the 1714 error. Although I’m not a fan, I ran a registry cleaner – restarted the machine and received the error again. So, it looks like the agent 5.10 is still seeing the previous installation. For your convenience here is the full error text – plus the information from my Event Viewer – Application log: Error 1714: The older version of World Community Grid – Boinc Agent cannot be removed. Thank you for providing so much detail.
As far as I can tell, you suffered registry corruption. It's unfortunate (and very rare). You may have made the situation worse by deleting additional registry values. How to fix this? Well, it isn't easy. You need to clean up the mess properly, using a tool from Microsoft. You can get it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Remove both BOINC and UD, then try the installation again. |

One thing I've really come to appreciate is the forced restore point saving and roll back of Vista. It worked okay in XP, but on Vista has yet to miss a beat.

Thank you so much!
The updated agent is now happily crunching away and only a handful of applications required re-installation. But this was a much better alternative then getting up close and personal with my copy Partitian Magic. Not that I mind reinstalling everything from scratch, and my machine is probably due for a re-format, but I had very different ideas for my Easter long-weekend! Again, thanks for the suggestion. Oh my goodness - someone saying something nice about Vista!?!
Cynicism aside, you've made an excellent point. For some reason I didn't even think about rolling back - although I did save my registry hives, before I went deleting stuff. However, after those changes were made and the agent still wasn't working, I wasn't completely convinced that re-importing the registry would have done any good. So I left everything as is. I do have this other machine, currently running the 64 bit version of XP, which is going to be introduced to Vista very soon. I will keep your idea in mind and I am sure that once the Boinc agent gets installed, and the Vista fluffiness removed (no registry editting - honest!) there will be a little person sitting on the CPU; pointing and saying "Engage." |

Yep, and you don't have to do anything. Install some upgrade or new app, mess up, roll back and everything is as if nothing ever happened. Those restore sets can be pretty darn big, but who cares with a half or whole terabyte of space. Just set the percent of space allowed and Vista keeps as many as will fit in.
