I've looked at topics about similar problems, but I can't seem to find a solution. I installed BOINC 5.10.21 yesterday on Ubuntu 7.10, but couldn't get any tasks to run for more than twenty minutes. After that, it gave me this message:
[World Community Grid] Task faah3289_ZINC03954491_xMut_md00870_01_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file [World Community Grid] If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. I restarted the project, the Terminal and my computer, but it wouldn't even start another project. This is all that it's doing now: 2008-03-18 18:11:58 [World Community Grid] Restarting task faah3289_ZINC03954491_xMut_md00870_01_1 using faah version 542 2008-03-18 18:11:58 [World Community Grid] Restarting task dddt0501c0134_100158_0 using dddt version 515 2008-03-18 19:29:42 [World Community Grid] Task faah3289_ZINC03954491_xMut_md00870_01_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 2008-03-18 19:29:42 [World Community Grid] If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. The "zero status" message repeats indefinitely after this. If anyone could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. |

Hello Raine Lawliet,
I'm quit new to Boinc myself. However after reading your post you might try to reset the project. From the advanced view choose the projects tab and hit reset project. You will lose the currently running work units, but have a good chance Boinc will start running OK. Alternatively you can choose detach. (Stop project) And then attach to the project all over again. Good luck, Path7. |

Path7,
Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, nothing has apparently changed. I can't seem to detach the project. (project www.worldcommunitygrid.org not found) Additionally, I'm running it through the Terminal because I can't figure out another way to do it, so I see no projects tab. If I attach the project again, then I'm brought back to this followed by nothing: [World Community Grid] Restarting task faah3289_ZINC03954491_xMut_md00870_01_1 using faah version 542 [World Community Grid] Restarting task dddt0501c0134_100158_0 using dddt version 515 |

Hello Raine Lawliet,
I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 about 3 weeks ago (dual-boot) and Boinc 2 weeks ago from the repositories. I'm not yet familiar with the command line, however found some info on: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/BoincCmd Perhaps you could find out in which state the Boinc client is at the moment. To solve the problems of your boinc client you need someone with more Linux experience than I have. I hope someone will reply to this thread soon. Success, Path7. |

An FAQ was created a while back, but think there is still some other undiscovered condition, known issues for one being the time keeping and the other the heartbeat monitoring being inhibited.

Unfortunately, none of this makes any sense to me. I honestly can't even pick out a starting point from those links. I only know that what I've tried so far hasn't done anything.
----------------------------------------First, I tried to detach the project: ./boinc -detach_project www.worldcommunitygrid.org The result: project www.worldcommunitygrid.org not found Next, I tried resetting: ./boinc -reset_project www.worldcommunitygrid.org It gave me the same result. It seems as though I'm getting the project name incorrect, but I can't imagine what else it would be. When I attached the project, I used this: ./boinc -attach_project www.worldcommunitygrid.org 074d10ee087d91f587fd72404fa04f15 If I add the numbers to either -reset_project or -detach_project, I get this: Unknown option: 074d10ee087d91f587fd72404fa04f15 The command-line options for ./boinc are intended for debugging. The recommended command-line interface is a separate program, 'boinc_cmd'. Run boinc_cmd in the same current as ./boinc. Following this, it showed me a list of boinc commands. Next, I tried this: boinc_cmd -detach_project www.worldcommunitygrid.org The result: The program 'boinc_cmd' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install boinc-client I did this, repeated my previous command, and got this: Authorization failure: -155 It gave me the same result for every boinc_cmd, including 'boinc_cmd -help'. Instead, I tried 'boinc_cmd --help' and got a list of commands. However, adding the extra dash to other commands still gave me the 'Authorization failure' message. You have a messed up installation.
Maybe not originally, but it's definitely messed up after everything you did! No matter. We can fix it. Start off by completely wiping the files you extracted. We will keep the apt-get package and use that instead. Since you don't much like the command line, I recommend you type sudo apt-get install boinc-manager to install BOINC Manager. Alternatively, you can use Synaptec to do it without using the command line. Finally, run boincmgr to get started. |

I believe that the installation was messed up to begin with. However, I've wiped the files and am now running BOINC Manager without a problem. Thank you for the advice.
