So long as it doesn't happen frequently, the error isn't worth worrying about. How often is "once in a while"?

Are you still on 5.10.21? If so at least go up to the recommended 5.10.45 which was tested for Ubuntu as the reference Linux distro. The messaging was also overhauled, so maybe something different will appear.

Apparently, I'm on 5.10.8 now. I reinstalled it so that I could use BOINC Manager. I assume that updating now wouldn't disrupt the projects?

They're spaced anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half apart.

Update any time you feel like it. The installation script stops BOINC, updates, then restarts BOINC. Note - WCG has its own installation script at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadBoinc.do?newMember=false
