I've read through the FAQs, but I still have a couple of questions.
#1. The FAQ recommends uninstalling the previous version of BOINC before installing a later version. Now I know it's POSSIBLE for things to go awry, but what is the PROBABILITY of things going wrong if I just update without uninstalling the previous version? #2. Where on the forums is the notification that we should update our BOINC agents for all WCG projects? Or must we always keep checking the download page? |

Hi Debs,
----------------------------------------- can you give a linky to that FAQ as uninstalling when upgrading is *not* required. Probability.... let me call the bookies but the odds are slim.... just do it.... do it all the time. - If there were a notification it would show in the Member News. Older versions actually get a message like 14 days after release of a new version in their message log, but that's from Berkeley and they are at times premature in advising on a new stable release.... WCG waits till it's proven in production. No must to upgrade, but we keep a FAQ in the start here forum with the WCG recommended versions with some links to the version history. If there were a must it be posted in the MN.

- can you give a linky to that FAQ as uninstalling when upgrading is *not* required. This is the path I followed: Start Here: Community-maintained FAQs > BOINC "How-To" Guides > Updating a BOINC Client Software Installation...Windows Installer Program > ...In theory it is possible to upgrade an installation of the BOINC Client Software without stopping the BOINC Daemon and the currently running Science Applications... So you're saying that you all do a 'clean' install of a newer version, and not an 'upgrade' install? Crap... I was hoping that the Updating page was just being overly cautious. ~~~ Sekerob: WCG waits till it's proven in production. So after it's proven, it'll be announced in the Member News? Or must I check either the FAQs/Start Here or the download page? (I'm hoping that you'll say that it'll show up in the Member News, and consequently my RSS Feed.) |

Do it all the time was meant as 'install over existing version while it's running and all and regardless if single user or service install'.
----------------------------------------Yes, that's the 'unofficial' BOINC wiki. It's that time to review some old forgotten posts and time to slowly forget that site exists. More probably an upgrade of the WCG download page is part of periodic Website Update announcement..... similar to the last one where it was announced that the download for the UD agent was removed... which showed up in your RSS. Some are still running with a 5.4 client without a hitch. Then also there is the quarterly newsletter (a moment for me just occurred). If it were really important to upgrade it be likely part of that.

Hi debsgr8!
----------------------------------------I have never uninstalled Boinc since I started it end of January last year. And I am upgrading without stopping it since it has been announced that the procedure would take care of it. So far I have had no trouble (I am running XP if that matters). Still, you must be aware that the upgrade procedure is simply doing the job for you, i.e. it will stop Boinc, upgrade "in place" and restart it. Therefore if you feel that some times are better than others (e.g. regarding how old is your last checkpoint) it is your responsibility to decide when it is best for you to start the upgrade procedure. As far as the need for upgrading is concerned, it is up to you. If your version is working well and you do not need any new feature it is fine to not upgrade. And generally I would advise you to not upgrade to an "unstable" beta version if you have no strong reason to do it. Cheers. Jean. |
