Reported Error on logging in to OS

Two FA@H WUs which I was crunching in a laptop reported as Error immediately after I logged in to the OS. I couldn't see anything significant in the standard error text of the WUs or in the BOINC log. I am providing the error text (i have skipped some part of it where the ellipsis appears) and log below

Re: Reported Error on logging in to OS

You probably run Vista given tis error - exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) Please visit the Vista How To FAQ in the Start Here forum for the fix. The particular error was also added to the standard Help (bottom right top), but upgrading to 5.10.35 or higher should fix that permanently.

ciao

[edit: did not even look beyond the error.... it's indeed Vista wink ]

Re: Reported Error on logging in to OS

Had already increased the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" value to 40 seconds (even though the instruction asked me to set it to 60) from 20 when couple of older WUs resulted in Error. Then there was no more of the same issue. Now the same problem has crept in again. Didn't know that the difference of 20 seconds will become such a big deal. Now increased it to 80 seconds. Don't want to take chance again.

Also added BOINC related exe files to Windows Firewall. Hopefully, the problem will not appear again.

Re: Reported Error on logging in to OS

As mentioned in post before you could go for BOINC 5.10.35. It overcomes the WaitToKill issue without the need to meddle with the registry, plus it captures more close down conditions that the WTC does not resolve and can still cause work to get corrupted. Works a charm on my Vista Quad.

I am bit skeptical about an unstable release of BOINC, so I would better wait for the next stable release with the work around.

Berkeley has moved 5.10.45 to recommended status.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

I have been testing each of the 5.10.xx versions as they were released and the .4x have been just as stable as the 5.10.30 version. And the Vista fast shutdown problem has been fixed in the latest versions.

Re: Reported Error on logging in to OS

That's great. Let me try that. I had installed 5.10.30 using the WCG distribution. I am not sure what it has extra when compared to the Berkeley distribution apart from the skins. Can I go ahead and install this new Berkeley distribution on top of the 5.10.30 WCG distribution without uninstalling that?
