Re: CPU time per project

Did I write Advance View instead of 'Advanced' menu (of the Advanced View)? On the 'Advanced' menu there is a Preferences option which will pop up a screen with 3 tabs.... unless mistakenly i assumed you were on BOINC 5.10.xx and are using a version before that. They don't have that screen, but then you'd have to manually edit the override file, which i was not assuming either.

Let me know if senility was only in the temporal lobe. Mine suffers, but oddly, once info manages to pass into permanent, I never forget (well rarely) wink

Re: CPU time per project

Sekerob,

I'm running BOINC version 5.8.15 - is that where the problem lies? From the Advanced drop-down menu in the Advanced View, there is no Preferences option, only 'Read local prefs file' and a few other things.

Can you explain my question "You say that I have activated local prefs on the WCG website but I can't see what you're referring to".

Thanks for your patience!

Re: CPU time per project

Yes, my mistake. Now see in your log it is 5.8.15. It's this line that tells you got a global_prefs_override.xml

06/03/2008 10:34:20||Reading preferences override file

can you find it in C:\Program Files\BOINC, open it with notepad and post the content. Just want to make sure there's nothing conflicting there.

Does your present message log indicate a fetch of an update profile from WCG?

Re: CPU time per project

Here is the content of the xml file:

- <global_preferences>
<run_on_batteries>0</run_on_batteries>
<start_hour>0</start_hour>
<end_hour>0</end_hour>
<net_start_hour>0</net_start_hour>
<net_end_hour>0</net_end_hour>
<disk_max_used_gb>4.000000</disk_max_used_gb>
<idle_time_to_run>5.000000</idle_time_to_run>
<cpu_usage_limit>60.000000</cpu_usage_limit>
</global_preferences>

I may increase the CPU usage limit to 70%.

My present message log indicates:

Re: CPU time per project

Yes, the next line cause your system to stop computing at the least user action.

<idle_time_to_run>5.000000</idle_time_to_run>

Suggest to delete the file restart BOINC and hit Update in the Projects tab while selecting WCG and only use the website device manager to alter your options.

Sorry for the slow progress on this. Prefer you to use 60 or 80, not 70 at that will cause a strange behavior of running 7 seconds and pausing 3. With 80 percent is will run 4 seconds and pause 1, but really try 100%.

Note that some of the options on the website are not implemented in 5.8.15. For that you need to go to 5.10.30 at least (the present WCG download offering). Cache is one and another is the stop computing when computer has not been used for longer. The Start Here forum has some explanation for the profiles and shows which WCG options require what BOINC version minimum. See it here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033

Re: CPU time per project

Hi Sekerob,

So you're suggesting that I should delete global_prefs_override.xml. I can do this but shouldn't I update from 5.8.15 to 5.10.30? Does that mean uninstalling 5.8.15 before installing 5.10.30 and how do I ensure that I don't lose any data accumulated to date?

Re: CPU time per project

Yes, delete the file.

The installation Upgrade is completely transparent and loss-less. Only downgrades require a prior uninstall.

Re: CPU time per project

..... If you have a laptop, it probably has poor cooling. In that case, you probably want the throttle at less than 100%. .......

I have an Advent Laptop with 1.73 gig Celeron, with Vista, running 24/7 at 100% without a single problem. The fan rarely comes on and it is quite cool to touch anywhere.....is it a rogue machine?

Re: CPU time per project

Hello Scribe,
Sounds like you bought a well-designed system. But I cannot tell that to people who bought laptops that are overstrained if they are actually used.

Tact!

Re: CPU time per project

Sekerob,

I'm now running BOINC version 5.10.30. Rather than delete global_prefs_override.xml, I simply chose to de-select "I want to customize my preferences for this computer only" on my PC. So, I should now be running Standard Settings - period. How quickly can I expect the BOINC client/server to respond to this change?
