CPU time per project

Hello there,

In the 'Projects' tab of my BOINC client, the only entry is 'World Community Grid'. It is not broken down into the individual projects that I have worked on. So, my question is - how do I find out how much CPU time I have contributed per project? If I can't answer this question, then I'll never be eligible for a project badge, presumably?

Re: CPU time per project

Hi Jay

WCG is as far as the BOINC client is concerned one project, so you will only ever see WCG totals there. As for the My Grid page, there are plans to split out the contribution by project.

The badges you see in the left margin was a first step so at least it can be 'shown off' on how many projects a member made more than 14 days of run time contribution. I've got 8, but there are 10, so i need to crunch a bit more for those (that are hard to get).

See you have 16 days crunch time with us. The fastest way to a badge is selecting on WCG project in your device profile and just do that until 14 days of time is accumulated. When you get your badge, switch to the next project, or simply hang in there long enough and they will come all by themselves if you selected to do all projects (that's the default, minus AfricanClimate which requires manual opt in)

Re: CPU time per project

Hi Sekerob,

As the My Grid page does not currently split out the contribution by project, does that mean that I can't get this information from WCG?

When you say "The fastest way to a badge is selecting on WCG project in your device profile and just do that until 14 days of time is accumulated". At any point in time, how will I know how much time has been accumulated? Taking DDD-T as an example, how do I find out how much time I've accumulated to date on that project?

BTW, DDD-T seems to have hit a lull as there is no work coming my way at the moment. The same is true for FAAH. Hopefully, it's just temporary.

Re: CPU time per project

There is no way unless you run BOINC and copy dump the Result status pages to spreadsheet or use BOINCview which tallies all completed work and allows filtering on science (the 1.5 beta 8 version i use).

There's plenty work for all the active projects, except AC@H.

What's your BOINC message tab info saying? Copy past the content here to satisfy our inexhaustible craving for actual log lines to analyse the problem.

Re: CPU time per project

Yes that's perfect and signals that you need change your options to allow more computing time which at this time is not enough to be able to meet the deadline of work. The new DDDT jobs have 12 days and HPF2 has 18 days, so try changing the 'My Projects" or in the Device Manager > Device Profile > Default > Custom profile and hit after saving the "Update" button in the project tab of BOINC, after selecting the WCG project line.

Re: CPU time per project

Sekerob,

I had a look at the 'Custom' profile but found it most confusing. Very humiliating and embarrassing when I tell you that I'm a Chartered Electronics Engineer!

Is there any reason why I shouldn't select 'Standard Settings' (I think I used to have 'Minimum Impact' selected). If I change to Standard Settings, do I still need to click on the 'Update' button in the Project tab of BOINC after selecting the WCG project line?

Where are the Standard Settings defined in order that I can try to assess the impact on my computer?

Re: CPU time per project

You could go for the maximum impact and if you find that imposing, go a step back to Standard. The "Update" is only needed if you have the patience to wait for the client to do a scheduled contact. As it says somewhere on the profile page, it only takes effect on next client contact.

Oh, and seeing you have activated local prefs (the line with the 'override' in it), go to BOINC Advanced Menu, Preferences, and hit the Clear button right top, so we're sure that the website profile is fully operational.

Re: CPU time per project

Hello jaypeecee,
We are going through some scheduler changes right now. It will take a while for the Duration Correction Factors to settle down. Right now I expect this to mainly affect people with large caches of work units. Since I am on a desktop with a constant Internet connection, I use a small cache.

Originally, distributed computer projects were set up to run all the time at lowest priority. This is the 'Maximum Output' profile. Pretty quickly special cases forced all sorts of confusing options to be added. Still, these are 'special' cases. For most people, 'Maximum Output' works great. If you have a laptop, it probably has poor cooling. In that case, you probably want the throttle at less than 100%. The BOINC throttle is very clunky, it starts and stops for seconds. So 60% means 3 seconds on and 2 seconds off. 50% is the smoothest at 1 second on and 1 second off.

Since I always use the Custom setting in my Device Profile, I am uncertain, but I think that the Advanced Options show each of your settings to match the profile that you have selected. I just limit BOINC memory usage to 90% and expect the OS to handle memory, rather than use the BOINC limits.

Re: CPU time per project

Sekerob,

I have just set my Device Profile at Standard. I may try Maximum Impact within the next few days.

You say that I have activated local prefs on the WCG website but I can't see what you're referring to. I also went to the BOINC Advanced View on my PC but could not find Preferences/Clear button.

I think I must be going senile.

Please help.
