Thanks I didn't see that. Thanks again.

The longer workunits should start being sent out tomorrow.
We will be increasing the deadline for those workunits to 12 days from the current deadline. This should help computers that were running it for the short workunits. |

Same for me. Now I've abandoned the project and am at FAAH and HCC. GO BACK TO SHORTER WORK UNITS PLEASE!!!! I am sympathetic with the users of old, small computers that desire shorter workunits.A short workunit on a fast computer is acceptable for a slow computer. A long workunit on a fast computer may not get done in time on a slow one. However, server communication capacity is limited (results/day), as was discovered when running short FAAH workunits a couple of weeks ago. IBM is investigating bumping that up with more servers, which would allow a higher percentage of short workunits. In the meantime, workunit size must be goosed up for the moment.

Aren't the workunits tiny in size (like 200k each)? How does this create problems for the servers? Is it that too many people are asking for new work too frequently? Or is it that we're all asking for work at the same time? |

The size isn't a problem. The load is on the other server processes, such as the scheduler, transitioner and validator. It puts a much greater load on the database and CPUs.

Goose-ing? Just received a 17 of 5.15, with 7 days deadline and 55 minutes per job Time To Complete in replacement of 32 completed version 5.10.... might be in for an other installment of client madness needing to learn, as the servers are needing to learn the new average run times.

Sekerob,
We took some steps to prevent client estimate madness. We loaded in the rest of the 'short' workunits yesterday. We then manually adjusted the estimated duration to be what we expected and started loading those workunits. We will continue to use the manual duration estimate until later this week when the estimate will be valid. The 5.15 DDDT application works with both the 'short' workunits and the 'long' workkunits. The 'long' workunits should start going out later today. These will have the 12 day deadline. |

As for those with slower machines that struggle to complete workunits on time. We are working with BOINC to put in place the ability to send shorter workunits to slower machines (slower meaning either they are less powerful or they aren't very often) and larger workunits to more powerful machines. This will meet both our need for a lower transaction rate to keep load on the database at an acceptable level but also make best use of all of the computers that are contributing.
This issue is very important to us so please do not think that we are ignoring the problems with workunit duration and deadlines. We are updating our BOINC server code in a little bit to include the latest code from BOINC. This is the first step. BOINC has been working to implement a better mechanism for matching workunits to the different computers. Once they finish the basic mechanism, we will be enhancing it to allow for matching workunits based on duration. |

Thanks Kevin, should have thought of 5.15 being backward compatible. What happens to 5.10 repair jobs? Will they run off 5.15 too?
