New, clearer, simpler forums on installing WCG/Boinc

Hello,

I would like to see some quite simple, clear and obvious forums on installing Boinc/WCG, Eg:

-How to install BOINC / WCG:
............. - Linux
....................... - Suse
....................... - Ubuntu
....................... - Red Hat
....................... - etc

............. -Windows
............. - Apple

At the moment, various relevant links are disbursed across the WCG site. It is very confusing. This topic is not rocket science. Better can be achieved. Let's not lose potential users to a failure to communicate. A clear link to such topics would be beneficial to the WCG.

Kind regards,

Mark H.

How many linux "etc." versions do you wish to see? Are you running all of those you mentioned? http://distrowatch.com lists at least 100 versions. The techs would not be able to get anything else done, least of all new projects.

This topic is not rocket science.

Rocket science is serious business, if done correctly.

A French Ariane blew up because of errors in the computer program.

Ariane 5's first test flight (Ariane 5 Flight 501) on 4 June 1996 failed, with the rocket self-destructing 37 seconds after launch because of a malfunction in the control software, which was arguably one of the most expensive computer bugs in history.

It was discovered that F-22s could not fly west to Asia. Their computers crashed when they crossed the date line. Fortunately they had more primitive escort aircraft, and were able to turn back.

Re: New, clearer, simpler forums on installing WCG/Boinc

Hello, retsof,

I appreciate you are cleverer than me. But, as Charlie Brown once said, Good Grief, (I know it was probably someone else saying Good Grief Charlie Brown, but I was never good at quotes).

In reality, the success of this project depends on accessibility. If this project wishes only one Linux distro to operate, then so be it. Let it then produce a step by step guide to ensure those with that distro are relieved of headache. If it wishes the top five distros to have access, let it so choose and produce the appropriate step-by-step guides. And if it wishes to add others as they become more popular, then add them too. Additions may require little but tweaking, a small price for the advancement of science and humanity. But do something. Don't let the standard rot with vague standards and ridicule on the hope the WCG survives.

So, if you wish to be flippant, I say to you: I've produced my step by step installation version, published herein,

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4925#117237

for SuSE 10.3 (and presumably for all versions of SuSE). What have you produced?

All of us have gained access to WCG by trial and tribulation. Let's put that experience to use and publish in clear, thoughtful terms.

It is not rocket science. The crew of Apollo 1 would agree with me. Their plight was rocket science, and they learned it the hard way. Given we are contributing to science, we ought to leave at home our personalities. We should instead fight like hell to bring the world on board. Hence, my original suggestion. It is not rocket science.

Mark

Re: New, clearer, simpler forums on installing WCG/Boinc

Mark, this is a BOINC problem, not specific to WCG. While I appreciate the effort you put into your step by step, I still recommend Eric Myers' guide for Suse. It covers most of the other major distros, too.

However, variability between distros and versions of distros complicate matters, as does the skill of the user. This is why there is no "one size fits all" solution for Linux, in spite of our best efforts. Novice Linux users can easily find themselves in disastrous situations of their own making, quite beyond their ability to fix.

I didn't comment on your guide at the time, since you had clearly found a solution that worked for you, and I didn't want to distract you by offering other methods. However, I don't offer your guide as a solution to other users. Lawrence just archived it for future reference, in case anyone else finds themselves in your situation.

Most novice Linux users, though, install BOINC with a package manager and have no trouble at all. For us, that is the gold standard - completely automated installation.

Read somewhere that BOINC these days is only tested for Ubuntu at Berkeley developers, for reason of there being too many distro's (that change seemingly every 2nd month). No keeping up is my thinking.

Thanks, Sekerob, for the comments which I understand. I'll review Eric's guide. Thanks for the helpful direction. (Will I ever be anything but a novice linux user?) ;)

I mainly reacted to the word "etc.", an open ended request.

Re: New, clearer, simpler forums on installing WCG/Boinc

Hi Retsof,

I am sorry if I appeared arrogant in my response to your email. I look back now and see the humour in your response. I also appreciate that I was a bit vague in using "etc". However, I do believe that more needs to be done to produce a clear guide to install Boinc/WCG onto the top 3 or 4 Linux distributions (SuSE, Red Hat, Ubuntu, or whatever are the most popular versions). Alternatively, there needs to be a very standardised auto-installation package of Bloinc for WCG that will work on the top 3 or 4 distributions. This cannot be a pipe dream (note my change in reference from rocket science ;). Else, how will WCG attract more assistance in its quest?

Anyway, I apologise for my very rude behaviour in my response to your well thought out and humorous comments. It was improper of me, and it merely reflected frustration on my part in the long effort I've taken to secure a stable Boinc/WCG system. I should never have taken out my silly frustrations on a fellow WCG user.

Kind regards,

Mark

Re: New, clearer, simpler forums on installing WCG/Boinc

Several here are using ubuntu...but that is also at the top of those that are reporting problems.

I'm not sure what that means. Are those using red hat or suse running more problem free or not using those versions much at all since ubuntu is more tested by the BOINC developers?

(That may be a rhetorical question.)

Good question that may be answered given empirical research. Anecdotally, I've been lucky, at least since simplifying the boinc installation steps in February. I have run boinc on SuSE 10.3 connected to WCG 24x7 since the beginning of February 2008 and so far no problems (I've even updated to Boinc 5.10.45 and all appears to be well.) Fingers crossed.
