I have been running SETI@home now for well over a year (and 2319 completed work units), and like the idea of donating my wasted resources to a project. Switched from SETI@home when I learned of this project a few days ago, and decided that it would have a more immediate impact on today's world. Finding ET would be neat, but researching infectious diseases and whatnot will be much more beneficial to mankind in the near future.
----------------------------------------Also, I really love the idea of the everyone coming together to support this project as denizens of Earth, not citizens of any one specific country. |

Okay, I know this will just take up space, but I just have to say it.
THIS IS SOOOOOOO COOL! SO VERY VERY [bleepin] COOL! My dad was an IBM man for 30 years. My dad had the money to feed and clothe and shelter me as a child because of IBM. So I am here, in part, because of them. I knew the minute I heard about this on the news that I would do it. Its such a great ideal for web-sters to aspire to. So many friends are dead now of aids, family members lost to cancer and heart problems, it just seems right to be giving something a little of my computers time when I'm not using it that moment anyway. I just started today and already I feel like I have my own little protein. Right now it's getting the aerobic workout of its life on my computer. When its done I'm going to feel so proud to have my own little protein to turn back in. I'm secretly hoping it'll make the cut for further study and I'll have raised one that turns out to make scientific history! Later, when I'm in Geneva accepting my award for the mighty little protein my computer raised, I'm going to try and be humble.... okay. one can dream of raising famous proteins, can't one? .... LOL keep 'em comin'. |

Thats something to think about. Until we finally conquer the frontier of Quantum computing I think such an idea as what you are talking about is not that farfetched.
That sets the stage for a new industry.. A company could "rent" CPU time from people in a grid setting and then charge private companies a fee to process on the grid. Any entreprenuers out there interested? Maybe we could come up with a plan! Jeremy |

I joined after I read about it on CNN.com......I just thought it was the absolutely neatest idea ever....and it makes me feel good that I can do something for the world by just leaving my computer on when I leave the house!

I think this idea also sets the stage for a government to tax the internet. Specifically, if you have a registered computer in your country, conceivebly the government could require you join their grid and tax you a portion of your CPU time, which could then be sold to setups such as this one.

I joined yesterday and have been letting my protein fold all night and day. I'm reminded of that commercial in the 70's where a woman is approached in a store or on the street and asked "what are you doing" and she replies "I'm cleaning my oven". Today as I've gone about my business at the shopping center and visiting friends I've been hoping somebody would ask me what I'm doing so I could respond "Folding a protein."

It's very refreshing to see that the world is still populated by so much wonderful people. I have been very touched by the responses that have come in so far. Keep them coming. We are all doing something good for humanity.
