Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

Yes, isn't it hyggeligt with familar faces. biggrin
Johnny Cool, as experienced year-round campers we dress according to the weather conditions. The worst thing that could happen for us would be the visibility to succumb to fog. We try to cover as much as possible of Colorado’s wonders – and I must say that there is plenty to explore. We don’t have to be realistic at all times. Our friend is imagination.

Now, tell me, where does your interest for tall ships come from, Johnny Cool? You’re a landlocked guy unless you have lived somewhere else. I love tall ships, too. They caress your eyes with their design, don’t they?

In Denmark we have three notable tall ships: The royal yacht, the Dannebrog, named for our flag. It’s not all that pretty in my view. It has something to do with the stern being lifted off the water. During the summer, our Queen and her husband used to make a voyage to a number of port cities and towns on board the Dannebrog. Here it is far from Copenhagen. It's Greenland.

The others are schooling/training ships for young people who want a career in the merchant navy. One is the Georg Stage

and the other one is the Danmark

both of which have a raised stern as well, but it looks better.

The ultimate training ship must be the Russian Navy’s the Kruzenshtern, even as there are numerous other large and beautiful ones from all over the world.

Tomorrow we’ll pass the high plain where you have tundra and permafrost and from there we’ll board Amtrak’s the Zephyr for a short, but visually interesting trip down the steep slope of Rockies with the winding tracks – arriving at Union Station in the middle of ’The Mile High City’. There is – as I recall it – a comprehensive museum for the American Indian.

TLD, she sure is beautiful! Wow!

@ little mermaid Landlocked? That is a geographic term/adjective. Maybe I was manning an oar on the way to Troy at one time in ages past; or with Magellan when he crossed the Pacific, or a viking Long ship during a great adventure, or maybe an outrigger criss crossing islands underneath a Polynesian sun. Either that or I was dreaming while reading a grand encyclopedia with those fantastic paintings/pictures/art works when I was 7-8 years old.

Or maybe it was after I saw an old pirate film on TV. laughing

What a day we had crunching! Incredible feeling looking at those stats. biggrin

Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

Very nice ship, TLD.
Did they build it according to the traditional olden ways?

Made me think of two other notable ones from my waters:
The Fregatten Jylland (the Frigate Jutlandia) which was saved from total ruin and went through an expensive restauration paid for mainly by public donations. It participated in a naval battle in 1864 battle during Denmark’s humiliating war against Prussia. The Frigate Jutlandia was up against the Prussian and the Austrian navies. It did well, chased away the enemy; it didn’t help. Our land forces lost pityfully. The Frigate Jutlandia is said to be the world’s longest preserved wooden ship, and now it serves as a museum ship.

The other one is the Havhingsten fra Glendalough (the Sea Stallion of Glendalough). It’s notable for being built entirely by hand according to the methods the acheologists studying Viking ships have determined were used without power tools or modern fasteners. It’s a true replica of the second longest Viking ship found at the bottom of Roskilde Fjord, those which now form the basis of the Viking Ship Museum
It has been sailed to Ireland and back more than once by sail and manpower at the oars; those oars are heavy.

EDIT: Two typos and the paragraph below:
Johnny Cool, I enjoyed your account on how you under no imaginary circumstances were a landlocked guy since you laid your hands on shipfaring books of all kinds.
I will call it no less that romantic and a very nice prose poem.

Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

Johnny Cool, How is your snow duty going?
This is Base Camp’s last day of scheduled crunching with Team Andrax
I don’t know if you or your team members have had the opportunity to go sightseeing in Colorado together with us Base Campers.
It ought to have been you who acted as our tour guide with your local knowledge, Johnny Cool, but it's hard with your captain status and your snow duties to get around to everything. I realize there are thousands of sights we missed, still, we had the good fortune to visit some of Colorado’s extraordinary beautiful places.

Tonight we would like to invite you and your team to have coffee and cakes with us as a sort of goodbye party.
If ever any of you should feel inclined to go trekking with Base Camp in the future, we should be very pleased to have you along. Our plans will be announced and discussed in our Base Camp team thread where you all are welcome any time.
