There are two common reasons for this:
1) The core client isn't running. Often, security software prevented BOINC Manager from launching the core client. 2) Communication is blocked. BOINC uses TCP on localhost port 31416 for communication - most firewalls permit this by default, but if you are overly paranoid, it may be blocked. Again, check your security software. If this doesn't help, then please give us further details so we can diagnose your problem more precisely. |

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I have disabled all security software and shut down the firewall. I am still not able to connect to the core client. Also when I go to Advanced-> Select Computer, I do not see anything in the drop-down. |

Okay, let me take you through some troubleshooting steps:
Things I need to know first: what operating system are you using, and what version of BOINC do you have? A word of caution: never shut down your firewall and security software entirely; it leaves your computer vulnerable. |

Thank you. The prevailing opinion around here is that Symantec are a pain in the neck, so we will do our best to help you.
First thing to do is rule out possibility (1). Make sure BOINC Manager is started, then open Task Manager and look at the process tab. Can you find boinc.exe? |

Hi
Both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are running. |

Okay.
Now, can you find the place in your firewall software that logs what is blocked? I don't use Symantec myself, so I am guiding you blind. However, this similar situation may help you: http://www.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/comp.security.firewalls/2003-02/2681.html |

OK, checked and it is not blocked. It appears under the Allowed list aling with WCG, Boinmgr.exe and Boinccmd.exe.

Can you specify exactly what is allowed?
Are you sure you don't have any other firewall or security software active at the same time? |
