Claimed/Granted credit - why such wide variances?

Having previously used the UD agent where the points allocated were fairly consistent, I find the points granted by BOINC inconsistent and confusing.

I usually claim about 9 points per hour of CPU runtime, but what is granted always depends on the other result. Sometimes it will be an average of the two results, but more usually I'm just granted whatever the other has claimed.

E.g. in this workunit I claimed 35.5 points for almost 4 hours CPU effort (obviously longer in real time), but when the other result eventually came in, they only claimed 14.7 points. So that's what I got.

So my question is - why is my claim never believed? And why wasn't I at least granted an average of the two results 25.1?

Re: Claimed/Granted credit - why such wide variances?

Hi,

Looking at your claim per hour of about 8, one would expect a machine with such a benchmark to do the dddt jobs in about 2 hours, so what CPU & speed, OS and type of computer are you running?

Because you seem not to process at the speed that the benchmark indicates, the claim is too high, thus adjusted to the second in the quorum. Who with 14 per hour is close to expectation of running it in about 65 minutes.

Re: Claimed/Granted credit - why such wide variances?

It's an IBM ThinkPad T41 with a Pentium III running at 846mhz, with 1kb ram (a bit long in the tooth these days I guess, but due for replacement this year...). The OS is XP.

I avg about 2.5hrs to do a dddt unit, though some have taken up to 4.75hrs.

By contrast, my most recent unit was for hpf2, which has a larger quorum. I claimed 83.2 for 9.37hrs and received 81.2, so that was almost spot on.

Maybe dddt is just less predictable, but I would like that badge....!

Re: Claimed/Granted credit - why such wide variances?

It's not unusual for older computers to be off the curve a little when it comes to credit. Often, the restricting factor is L2 cache.

Don't worry about it. The WCG credit system is fairer than it has ever been.
