[error] CPU benchmarks timed out, using default values

I'm getting the subject message about every 5 minutes recently, in a series like this:
2008-02-21 09:16:57 [---] Running CPU benchmarks
2008-02-21 09:16:57 [---] Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks
2008-02-21 09:21:58 [---] [error] CPU benchmarks timed out, using default values
2008-02-21 09:21:59 [---] Resuming computation
2008-02-21 09:21:59 [---] Running CPU benchmarks
2008-02-21 09:21:59 [---] Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks
2008-02-21 09:26:59 [---] [error] CPU benchmarks timed out, using default values

This doesn't sound like productive work to me. Any way to address this?

Had this and it was, guess what, the software firewall interfering. Check BOINC permissions.

Re: [error] CPU benchmarks timed out, using default values

Please will you give us the specs for your computer?

Not sure what you are looking for, but here's some info:
- Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5)
- Pentium 4, 3.6 GHz Hyperthreading enabled
- 2.5 GB mem
- 13G free space disk
- 2G swap about 25% used
- BOINC 5.10.21

Preferences:
Use at most 10G disk
Leave at least 0.1G free
Use at most 50% total disk
Write to disk at most every 60 secs
Use at most 75% of swap
Use at most 50% of memory when in use
Use at most 90% of memory when idle
Use at most 80% of CPU time

Re: [error] CPU benchmarks timed out, using default values

Please will you use top to check on the CPU profile while BOINC is trying to benchmark?

Thank you.

That would imply that something had changed, no?
Nothing has changed, that I know of, but what would I look for? everything related to port 443 seems open outgoing and open for "related connections" incoming

Re: [error] CPU benchmarks timed out, using default values

I've only had it once and did not record, but it was something with memory access and on Vista, so with Linux that's likely not. You mentioned Hyperthreading. Is the BOINC set to only use 1 core for crunching?

I did have a rogue java process consuming over 100% of CPU time. When I killed it, and waited a bit, the state of the WCG tasks has now changed from "Suspended - Running CPU benchmarks" to "Running, high priority".

I'm guessing I'm back in business. :-)
