Has anyone compiled binaries for GNU Linux for Sparc? My Sparc runs 64bit Aurora Linux. Am I able to get the source so I can compile it for this system? Do the authors have binaries for GNU 64 bit Linux on a Sparc CPU if so can I please have it? Also please be aware my Sparc is headless and does not use a GUI - it's a completetly text interface.

You can compile BOINC on almost any platform, but World Community Grid don't provide the science applications for any platforms other than x86 and Mac PPC. If you can emulate Linux x86, you may still be able to contribute. Otherwise, you will have to find a BOINC project that supports your platform.

There are some lists at the unoffical BOINC wiki :
http://www.boinc-wiki.info/Catalog_of_BOINC_Powered_Projects http://www.boinc-wiki.info/The_Current_List_of_Alpha_Test/Beta_Test_Projects SETI and SIMAP supports Linux on SPARC. |

You may want to check this which offers BOINC compiled for various platforms.
If that doesn't work, here is the instructions to make your own client software. |

The important line to note on the table referenced in previous post is:
----------------------------------------"These downloads are not endorsed by BOINC or any BOINC project; use them at your own risk." It is very difficult for WCG or the helping volunteers to support these builds.... the code is open source afterall. If there is a bug you need to go back to the one who created the distro and eventually if it is an original source code issue, report it in the Trac system over at the BOINC dev forum for evaluation and discussion.

Where's the problem ? - It's a legal stateemnt, as WCG should it have simliar on there website. No, it's not difficult. There is a good communication between the porters and the BOINC devs. Also, there is a good communication with the user base. Failures on the third party builds would very fast reported from the users to the porters. |

Dotsch, do you want us to send anyone using a third party build straight back to the porters or BOINC devs?
Sorry, your claim doesn't hold up based on our experience here. Some bugs are specific to SSL, and as the only SSL project, WCG are the first to experience them. Getting bugs fixed takes huge amounts of time and effort, and getting the fixes into the ports is even harder - particularly when the errors were introduced by the porters. So, we can't officially support them. They could contain anything - third party releases may easily contain malicious code. But we do our best to help all our members despite these difficulties. We only pass the buck to BOINC as a last resort. |
