Several unrelated questions.

1 - I just updated my device profile with different connection and execution times. The last time I did this it didn't update in the program until it sent results to the server. Is there a way to force the agent to "get" the profile settings? (It's important that I get an answer fairly quickly to this; I've got one sitting at 99.8% right now and it went idle at 8pm, won't start running again until 1am, and won't connect until noon tomorrow.)

2 - Occassionally windows will have a problem of some sort(I'm running 2k Pro) and I'll lose a bunch of systray icons. Is there any way to get the icon back short of force-quitting from the task manager and restarting?

3 - Sometimes I am unable to connect to the internet for prolonged periods of time. Twice now it has completed a very large task(50 hours or more) and didn't have an opportunity to connect and get a new task. So, after about 24 hours of not being able to connect, apparently it started over on the task. One time it completed the task again and successfully submitted results; the other it connected but didn't send any results and as such I got no points for it. (You can see one large gap in my "Points" graph right before a very high bar, this is the first example.) Why does this happen, and what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future?

confused Re: Several unrelated questions.

1) Unfortunately, a new profile can only be downloaded as part of a new Work Unit. This method ensures that no one else can modify your profile unless they gain entry to your password protected Member Area on the server. But as a result, there are only two ways to force a profile download.

First, you could destroy your current Work Unit by using Task Manager to End the WCGrid_Rosetta program. This forces a complete reload, including a large download containing a new copy of Rosetta, in case something has corrupted it. This is NOT what you want to do. Note that using Exit after right-clicking on the systray icon is very different. That initiates a smooth shutdown, losing only the computations since the last checkpoint. Rebooting will start the program at the last checkpoint. 'Snooze' is even milder and suspends the process temporarily without destroying any computations.

Secondly, use the ugly kludge of changing the system time manually to a time the Agent can run and communicate. It will complete, then download your new profile after sending back the result file. Then reset the clock to the correct time. I have never done this myself. Conceivably you might have to manually click on the shortcut in the Start folder.

2) There used to be a 'known issue' listing about missing systray icons, but that post has been deleted. If the icon does not reappear with the new Work Unit, look in 'Settings' - 'Taskbar and Start Menu' . If everything looks good go on to 'Customize' and see if it is listed in the Start Menu. If that does not work, then the only thing I can think of is Uninstall / Reinstall.

3) Are you sure it actually ran the SAME Work Unit over again? In any event, this is beyond me. If problems like this continue, try to eliminate possibilities by rebooting, then doing the complete uninstall / reinstall to ensure that it is not caused by some peculiar state. And create a paper log to keep track of Work Units and points awarded, etc. since the current Agent does not maintain a log for you. If nothing turns up, then we can both scream for professional help from the staff. [You following this, Nels? Big Grin]

Unirac,

I have just done some searching on the web for systray information about Windows 2000 for another query. It seems that the systray was pretty much hardwired back in Windows NT days. Then in Windows 2000 the user could finally tweak it, but only by using shareware / freeware programs. Now, in Windows XP the user can make some changes right from the Desktop. And yes, in Windows 2000 systray icons can be lost, just like those pretty icons in browser Favorites / Bookmarks can revert to images of blank pages for no obvious reason.
