Agent paused after new installation

Hello,
I've installed the client on a W2000 PC with 128MB RAM and a Pentium 166MHz processor. The agent paused after loading some kilobytes. I have no idea to get this pc running....my other pcs work well with even 128MB but Pentium200, I try to stop the firewall, but same result without it... crying

Hi Schmuecking_P
The problem you are experiencing appears to be the same as reported for McAfee anti-virus software with buffer overflow enabled. Please check out the FAQ at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1804#10050 relating to this. If you are not running McAfee, let us know and we will delve further into your problem.

confused Re: Agent paused after new installation

First thing to check is the system requirements at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/system_requirements.html which specify that virtual memory must be enabled. The Human Proteome Folding Project runs WCGrid_Rosetta.exe, which takes up 200 MB of virtual memory all by itself.

Second, exactly where does the pause occur? Does the installation complete?

Do you have an Agent showing 'Agent Paused' as discussed in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/agent_paused.html ?

Re: Agent paused after new installation

I checked the requirements and I cannot find a problem there.
1. Pentium 1 166 MHz
2. 128MB Ram (384-512 Virtual)
3. On installation drive 3GB free, system 1GB free
4. 800x600 16Bit
5. DSL
6. W2000

It is a fresh W2000 installation only with NAV, ZoneLabs and Spybot
installed (same as on my other running machines).

Now I deinstalled and installed WCG agent again, but the same...
registering, downloading 0 from 0, then x from 16xxx and in the
same moment after some kb downloading the agent paused message
pops up like described in your link...
I have no more idea...

I assume that there are no proxy settings for you to worry about. If the log on your Zone Alarm firewall does not show it blockng anything from ud.exe, ud_****.exe or WCGrid_Rosetta.exe, then I am at a complete loss. I do not know anything about NAV 7.6. Is that relatively current? Anybody have any ideas?
Added: Have you tried disabling NAV, then maximizing / minimizing the Agent to force a connection? Just for an experiment, this would eliminate a possibility.

Re: Agent paused after new installation

It's not necessarily a problem with only new installations. I have the Grid Agent running on two machines, and both are now suffering from the "Agent paused" problem. Here's a rundown of hopefully relevant info:
  • both machines worked successfully before
  • my configuration has not changed
  • the Grid Agent on both machines has been unable to upload results (it eventually times out, and then goes into the "Agent Paused" state)
The "Sending information to Grid server..." status would normally go away fairly quickly under normal operation. Now, it eventually times out, and is followed by the "Agent paused, see www.wcgrid.org/cause.html" status. As noted online, the Grid Agents automatically try again after an interval, so the whole process repeats.

Here's a timeline of sorts:
  • This problem first surfaced at approximately 04:15 UTC this morning (an Agent completed a work unit, and was unable to upload the results). My other machine completed a work unit at approximately 06:21 UTC this morning. Both machines were unable to upload results (repeated cycles of attempts, followed by "Agent paused").
    • After double checking my configuration (ie. firewall settings, internet connectivity, etc.) I sent in a problem report.
    • For what it's worth, during this time the World Community Grid web site was also very slow.
  • At about 11:20 UTC, both Grid Agents started new work units (within a minute of each other).
  • One Agent completed its work unit by 13:00 UTC.
  • The other Agent completed its work unit about a half hour later (13:33).
  • Both were unable once again to upload the results (ie. they went back into the cycle of sending, failing/timing out, pausing, retrying).
  • Well, while writing this, one of the Agents finally started a new work unit (20:12 UTC). If nothing else, that success uploading shows that my configuration is not the problem. The status on the other Agent is still "Sending results"
  • Update -- my second Agent started a new work unit at about 20:45 UTC),
Hope that helps.

Rod
(update was just to add another item to the timeline)

cool Re: Agent paused after new installation

This is starting to sound like the recent 'Server Availability' thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1723 . Take a look at knreed's post there.

confused Re: Agent paused after new installation

Yeah, these threads are sounding somewhat similar. At least I haven't had a problem signing in to the web site. smile

DNS (as mentioned in some of the posts of the other thread) is not the issue for me. I didn't detail it in my first post, but when I mentioned:
After double checking my configuration (ie. firewall settings, internet connectivity, etc.) I sent in a problem report.

here's what I tried (where "Host" was server.worldcommunitygrid.org):
  • verified firewall settings
  • nslookup Host (to verify DNS)
  • ping Host (success would a route, although failure here might simply mean the host does not respond to pings)
  • tracert Host (to see the path)
  • netstat /a while the Grid Agent indicated it was sending results (none of the above are specific to port 443) -- connection on port 443 was listed as established
All completed OK, so DNS, and/or my firewall and/or my ISP connection was not the problem. Something else was the root cause behind my Grid Agents inability to upload results.

knreed mentioned tracert, and then sending those results in. Would that be of use for you, even though all indications are that DNS is not an issue for me? In any case, I'd like to make clear that my machines haven't had a problem (that I've noticed wink ) before this round of "Agent paused". In general, the grid works great!

Thanks for your help.

Rod

Re: Agent paused after new installation

Another item for the timeline.
  • the 20:12 work unit was completed at 22:38. The "Sending Results" phase was much longer than "normal operation," but the upload was successful. A new work unit started about 22:50.
Between my two machines, the problem uploading results and then falling back to "Agent paused" has totalled about 26 hours today. Compared to that, this upload was a definite improvement.
