rfe: control panel for cpu usage

i think you would have more people using the system if you allowed us to adjust the percentage of cpu we would like to allocate to processing. as it is now, the only control is when. allowing us to control the cpu utlilization would convince me to run the task behind the scenes all the time thus giving you much more of my computing power. without this, i'm prone to just leave the program running as a screen saver which won't give you much cpu time.

just a thought,
neil

Re: rfe: control panel for cpu usage

The agent runs at lowest cpu priority so it uses all of your spare cpu power. After installation, this is the default setting, so you should be contributing all of the time that way. If you do notice any performance degradation, it is most likely due to memory usage and swapping the agent in and out of memory. This is of concern only on machines with less physical memory of when you have lots of applications open. You can always put the agent into snooze mode or set it to only run as a screen saver, if that becomes a problem in your case.

Re: rfe: control panel for cpu usage

Agreed. I overheat when my cpu runs at 100% for long periods of time. Bad, very bad. Please please please fix this soon so I can run this. Until then I cannot!

Re: rfe: control panel for cpu usage

I was under the impression that the grid program only uses excess cycles that would have been used up by the System Idle Process anyway, so that the comp actually isn't doing any more work with the grid operating than without.
As a non-techie, I could easily be wrong, but that's what I thought.

Re: rfe: control panel for cpu usage

I agree the capability to reduce usage should be included to prevent overheating, mostly on laptops. This should be easy to do, by calling the system idle process (that uses Halt instructions in NT, W2K & XP) until the specified % of time is done.

For laptops, there should be a second mode to allow for even lower usage (or complete shutdown) when the machine runs on batteries. Peoples won't like to see their PC running out of power twice as fast as it used to after installing WCG.

run it in screen-saver only mode

This is what the grid agent is supposed to do. It uses whatever CPU time nothing else is using, and uses it to do many, many calculations. Basically, whenever your computer would normally become 'idle', we put it to work.

Also, if your laptop is unplugged and is running on batteries, the agent will immediately stop the actual calculation until power is restored. Thus, your computer battery won't drain any faster than it normally would.

But just because the thread is running at low priority doesn't mean it generates any less heat! As soon as the cpu is running at 100% it generates the maximum amount of heat, regardless of the priority.

Re: rfe: control panel for cpu usage

Heat, and therefore noise is the issue, not cpu performance.

Re: rfe: control panel for cpu usage

Yes, yes, yes. Let me vote like a Chicagoan 3 times for this. I've had to uninstall. I want to run this program. I want to recommend this program, but can't until it includes some kind of built in throttle. It's too much for my amd laptop to run 24/7. The fan screams constantly and I think that's gonna scare off alot of average and willing users like me.

Great idea. Hope lots get behind this and make it work.
