I agree that additional configuration options would benefit the acceptance of the idea greatly. Perhaps that there is a lower resource bound that makes the ROI too insignificant to bother with and would eliminate some people (very few IMHO), but more flexible CPU and execution-time allocation options would only make it's appeal broader (again, IMHO).
I believe that this will be the number one deterrent to wide spread usage, especially among laptop users. That's my two cents, anyway ($432,587.37 adjusted for inflation). |

I too would like to be able to set this to use some percentage of my cpu... I want so specify something like 5000% of available cpu.

Hello from Russia.
I had run the UD projects in previous years and had coped out exactly when my CPU was changed to a more powerful one - cause it had been overheating. Until yesterday I've run F@H on my family's 3 pcs. Now I swapped the most powerful system to WCG. It was good to be back to a good-looking client, but the downside is that it hasnt gained more functionality after all this time. I want CPU usage tab. I will run it for some time, and if I see the users suggestions arent being listened to, I'll do a rightbutton-exit WCG and double left click-start F@H. Best regards, Artyom. |

Yep, I'd like to have a little more control of CPU usage too. My CPU (Athlon XP2000) gets quite hot when used @ 100%, so I'd probably set it to something like 70% and try that.
I have a program installed called cpuidle that tries to cool the CPU during idle periods, and it does a crazy good job of it (55C -> 36C or so). With this grid program running along with cpuidle, the "Task CPU Time" is increasing at about realtime, but I can see in the Task Manager that cpuidle is taking about 80% of the CPU to do its idle thing...is that how the "Task CPU Time" is supposed to work? I'm guessing not...I would think that the CPU time would only go at about 20% of real time in that case. |

This would be an awsome built-in feature. In the meantime, check out a freeware util called ThreadMaster:
http://threadmaster.tripod.com/ It allows you to set a ceiling on the CPU percent per process. I set the WCGrid_Rosetta to 15% and my laptop is thanking me for it. e |

I was under the impression that the grid program only uses excess cycles that would have been used up by the System Idle Process anyway, so that the comp actually isn't doing any more work with the grid operating than without. As a non-techie, I could easily be wrong, but that's what I thought. ![]() System Idle Processes doesn't really do anything. That's why when it's running at 99% or so you don't see and CPU usage. It's just a way for the OS to know that something is 'using' the processor power, and to keep track of it. Running the Grid Agent actually uses your CPU and makes heat. I noticed a 10 degree jump after starting the Grid agent on my P4 HT, and if I start two threads I get a 15 degree jump (that's with 60 cfm fans). |

Agreed. I overheat when my cpu runs at 100% for long periods of time. Bad, very bad. Please please please fix this soon so I can run this. Until then I cannot! What kind of system are you running? You might be able to help this out by adding another exhaust fan, though it might depend on how your case is designed whether this will help or not. You can also add a circulation fan, and this might help. The power supply fan almost always blows out. If you have another fan near the processor and it blows out, and you don't have a vented case, you probably can't do much except add a pci circulation fan (I think altex has these, just not on their site). If it blows in (onto the processor), you can be able to add a pci exhaust fan (goes in down with all the add-in cards). You may also want to check how much air flow space you have. If you have a lot of clutter in your case, it will make things hot. I have a front vented case and I use the extra exhaust fan, and it keeps my system 5 deg. cooler than it used to be (small change because I have 2 other fans and a lot of airspace). |

Most people don't even notice because the boxed coolers are getting better and better. Only we 'freaks' want it to use less cpu. So let's just use a 3de party tool and let the crew work on things that realy care for the project ![]() Greetings Pconfig |

hello there,
I'm fairly new to the WCG, started to run the application on a couple computers after a friend pointed it out to me. I would want to install it on even more PCs of our group here at the university, especially as we work in the general area of protein folding and modelling. our admin however has raised concerns over a program running the cpu at 100% 24/7 .. so I had to put that off until there will be a build in feature to set a maximum percentage given to the task .. This would be an awsome built-in feature. In the meantime, check out a freeware util called ThreadMaster: http://threadmaster.tripod.com/ It allows you to set a ceiling on the CPU percent per process. I set the WCGrid_Rosetta to 15% and my laptop is thanking me for it. e and honestly .. I don't quite feel like installing yet another program just to make up for the flaws of this one  so long Sandahar |

If your system overheats, you need to add a fan or get a better CPU cooler.
If you built your computer, learn more about how computers manage heat. If you bought your computer, get a different band next time. First, open up your computer and get your vacuum in there. Dust will cause anything to overheat. |
