I don't understand how being able to control the maximum CPU percentage is not, as advertised, a throttle feature. Although the project has IBM backing, the software we are running is done under license and any "features" added are made with great difficulty.

This is not a "throttle feature", just some Windows tweaking. We don't use "Windows tweaking" for the throttle feature. Our research programs are equipped to throttle themselves according to the setting for most of the run time. There are only a few minutes at the start and end of a run where the throttle is not enforced. |

I agree that overheat could be an issue. It would be great if you could add in controls that would allow the grid agent to rest for a certain number of minutes per hour or something like that. Currently you can only set start and stop times for the day, with only one set of start/stop times, and if that could be increased it would probably be helpful. Also, integrating threadmaster into the install/agent package would be a good idea. I look forward to this development!

Yes, yes, yes. Let me vote like a Chicagoan 3 times for this. I've had to uninstall. I want to run this program. I want to recommend this program, but can't until it includes some kind of built in throttle. It's too much for my amd laptop to run 24/7. The fan screams constantly and I think that's gonna scare off alot of average and willing users like me. There already is a throttling feature, especially if your notebook can't handle this. The problem is usually found on laptops with limited cooling.Great idea. Hope lots get behind this and make it work. World Community Grid CPU throttle feature It was already mentioned a few times in this thread. Now, what does not reading the Community read-only FAQ ahead of time have to do with a Chicago voter suggesting something we already have? You don't have to vote with your feet. Some laptop problems can be fixed by elevating them above a flat surface, like on a metal pie rack, and/or pulling out some of the drawers so the air can get in/out of there. If not, throttle the beast. WCG also turns off when the computer is on battery power. Another grid forum mentioned that running at 100% duty cycle is very bad on the battery and shortens its life. Resist the temptation. If it is throttled down severely to like 20% or so, I don't know whether WCG stays on or not when on battery power. Just run on fossil power if you have the choice.

Not sure what all the confusions is about here..but, my understanding is that people don't want their processors running so hot..especially in laptops.
I can say if you have a decent desktop computer setup then it should be able to manage with 100% CPU usage from my experience without much of a hitch. Also, to make sure you clean out the dust atleast once every 3 to 6 months would be good :) I know many people forget they should do it...NO need for extra insulation! I'll agree that a laptop can cook-off real quick by using the CPU. I'm not even sure if its a good idea. However, i could agree there should be some other features built into the grid software even so. I would like to hear about or see software that checks your CPU temperature, checks for overclocking and constantly monitors this making sure all parameters are within safe, reliable specs. I'm against overclocking and wouldn't allow it myself for just the errors it would put in data and compromise integrity. Anyway, the software could scale back the amount of work in relationship to heat generated to keep within acceptable specs and for system safety/reliability/longer service life...and to make sure no permanent damage occurs also. Well, that is my random thoughts and 2 cents on this issue...have good day. |
