ement team Re: How far along is the Human Proteome Folding project

Community Representatives Needed

The WCG advisory board would benefit from having a consumer representatitive/s - e.g from some of the larger PC user groups (Boston, London, Melbourne) and on-line fraternities.

Western governments learned this in the 70's and most major corporations know the importance of consumer relations - plus good media PR.

With over 55,000 member contributors donating THEIR equipment use at their own cost, it's important that at least one consumer represtatitive be on the board - preferably a representative from a large, experienced, independent & ethical group (as above).

Other professions with similar challenges have recognized the need for good communication with users and sound project management - e.g. the move to common global financial reporting, through the adoption of IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) - a big challenge for companies & accountants, with myriad regional training activities worldwide, for the targeted start in 2005/06. The benefit - better information & protection for investors, easier international trade and cheaper finance.

I am quite impressed.
Anyway, discussing the composition of the Advisory Board is best carried out in a separate thread in Suggestions forum. The current board is heavily weighted toward the medical field rather than to, for example, high energy physics. This is consistent with the aim of the World Community Grid, which is that of a charitable agency trying to help people.

Re: How far along is the Human Proteome Folding project

Replying to Dr. Bonneau's request for feedback about a status report...

I believe that having a representative get on possibly PBS or a popular news channel, would have multiple benefits.
The first benefit would be obviously to make WCG more popular. The more popular it is, the more members. The more members, the more devices which leads to more processing power... you get the point.
The second benefit would be for the representative to publically give a status report to not only the current grid members but other people to try to convince them to donate their otherwise wasted computing power.
Since this is an international project, the interview, public statement or whatever could be put on the website as the text, video recording, and/or audio recording.

That is just my best idea to help the project more. Afterall, the way i heard about WCG is through slashdot.org, which maybe has 500,000 viewers a day vs. a news channel that, here in America, gets many times that number.

Re: How far along is the Human Proteome Folding project

Still a lot to go through yet sad

We really need to speed this thing up. It would be cool if you could report progress more and get the news out to different sites!

Mr Gates likes to give a lot to charities. Its probably a longshot but I wonder If Microsoft would ever consider contributing to something like this project;

Basicly what I mean is, when you install Windows, you get prompted with a msg saying "would you like to contribute to any one of these projects by having this screensaver"

There is a lot more you could be doing to get more users involved in this, you need to talk to other software companies and WHOEVER YOU CAN! cool

rose Re: More that we could be doing

As just another member I agree, and I disagree. Sure there is a lot more that we could do, but perhaps it is the hardware/software issues which are preventing us from going "mass audience".

How can we bring "the average user" aboard until:

We can service the increase in users?
We get the bugs out of the install process?
We can safely install Rosetta without the user running the risk of frying their cpu?
We can make the whole process simple enough that a 6th grader could use it?

Hell, I can not recommend WCG to most of my friends because they lack the time, skills or patience to install it. Not to mention the fact that I am not about to risk a friendship because someone accidentally fries their cpu.

Ergo, as I see it, we are in somewhat of a holding pattern not because of a lack of marketing, but because of a lack of a sufficiently developed infrastructure. peace

I'd like to hear what the community administrators and WCG techs have to say on this issue. thinking

cool Re: More that we could be doing

julied,
I can only speak for myself. Most people install and run WCG without any problems. But those who do have problems find the client error messages unhelpful. I do not view this as a reason to avoid expanding our membership. Still, I am very aware that we need to improve. I am really looking forward to getting our own agent that we can readily modify (Linux X86 first) to remedy this problem.

As for frying CPUs, I must admit that I mainly consider that a hardware problem. From my point of view, why would anybody buy a computer so poorly designed that it can only be run for light email tasks? If the computer fries, hold the retailer / manufacturer responsible and scream for replacement. Not that I am unsympathetic to anyone who was victimized by shoddy manufacturers.

Added: Second thoughts - we are letting this thread drift out of control. Discussion of what the World Community Grid needs to do should be in 'Member to Member' or 'Feedback'. Nothing in these last posts is really related to the HPF Project. smile
