I have loaded the WCG agent on 2 machines. The first one (cable modem) registered right away and downloaded a work unit, and started to crunch on it. The second one (on a different LAN - T1) wouldn't register for a while, but about 8 hours later it did register but couldn't download a work unit. This morning the first machine finished the work unit, and appeared to upload the results, because points showed up in the WCG agent, but won't download a new workunit off either network. On cable modem connection, since it was able to register and download a work unit initially, I do not think it could be a firewall issue. Have great connectivity to the internet, including WCG sites, on either network.
On eitherr machine/either network, if I exit the agent and re-run it, it says it is downloading about 2K of data, apparently this error message: The Grid Agent has encountered a problem while attempting to connect to he Grid Server. This may occur if the Grid Server cannot find any suitable workunits for your Agent, because the Grid Server is offline for maintenance, or because your computer is not online. if you are not online, please initiate a network connection at your convenience. The Agent will utomatically communicate when the problem is solved. So, I've been through all the suggestions on the help page at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/connecting_to_the_server.html, but no luck. Kind of dampens my intiial enthusiasm, got all these spare CPU cycles hungry to fold proteoms, but now just spilling out onto the floor wasted Assuming that if there was a problem on the server side it would be posted somewhere in the forums or on the home page (right?) but since there isn't then the problem would be on my side. I do not know how to further troubleshoot this, (since it was working on the one machine) Is there a particular hostname I can check to make sure my DNS can resolve, or an IP address I can try to ping? Are there additional workunits available to be downloaded? Is the server running steady at some max # connections and maybe someday I'll chance to find one open? Sorry to nag about these problems, but want to participate, just having trouble doing it. |

ok, got a packet sniffer, and can see traffic between me and server.worldcommunitygrid on port 443, starts as an https, sends a <whoami> back and forth, then some binary stuff I can't parse, and then just stops and the agent says can't connect to server (even though I could see what appeared to be a valid connection). So, seems like most people are having no connection issues, some are. so I guess my problems are on my side, but I've spent too much time banging my head on this. |

Check to see how much Ram is installed on your system.
I have 2 machines. New w/512mb no problem. Old one w/64mb (Win 98) " unable to connect" I read somewhere that you MUST have a minimum of 128mb or RAM (seems like a bad error message, oh well...) |

Got my problem resolved, and I am sure that the admins will not be surprised to find out that it was
----------------------------------------Stupid Operator Error saw threads that said I would get better points if I changed my profile to a larger disk value, so I changed it to the max, of 10. unfortunately I set it to 10 MB. I meant to set it for 10 GB. How big is a work unit, and if the softare won't work with a 10MB disk setting, shoudl it still be an option? I was going through killing processes and shutting down services and trying to find some way to get through, determined to find something that would make it work, and noticed the error in the setting. Since I used a common default profile on the second machine, it could register but refused to download a workunit there, I assume for the same reason So, do not set your disk space to a value smaller than the size of a work unit for a project, unless you specifically want to prevent your WCG agent from downloading a new workunit. I guess you could use it the way that SETI used the stop_after_send.txt file Perhaps a better error message would have saved me a couple days of troubleshooting, but I can't point the finger for this one to anyone but me. Ah ... problem solved ... I too had tinkered with the profile and set the disk size to 10 meg. When I set it back to 5 gig, the work packet immediately started downloading to my machine. Thanx joatman! Umm... I just heard the fan kick in ... the packet must be here.

ok tried all this stuff still no luck with mine. It is connecting it's just downloading so slowly that it times out and I get an unable to process data backing off msg.
specificly opened ports 114, and 80 on my router. Allowed WCG through my firewall software. I just don't see where the error is, it's been 3 days now i need a new WU |

Yes, I am able to connect by temp disable of firewall per your suggestion, but of course don't want to perm disable. I have Norton Firewall and don't see where to permit particular sites, such as server.worldcommunitygrid.org. I do have the UD.EXE program set for "permit all" access. Are there other programs that need permit access as well? Help appreciated! Thanks! Rob
