I'm trying to install from the RPM I got from http://pirates.spy-hill.net/download/RPMS/ an am having problems. When I install, I get the following output in the terminal
linux:/home/david/Downloads # rpm -i boinc_client-5.10.29-1.i386.rpm warning: boinc_client-5.10.29-1.i386.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 671f3ff5 Installing boinc_client-5.10.29... * Creating working directory /var/lib/boinc and user 'boinc' ... Finishing installation of boinc_client-5.10.29... BOINC Manager password: Error while trying: gethostid The BOINC client requires initialization. [WARNING] Starting BOINC client as a daemon: [FAILED] Now run `boincmgr` to attach to a BOINC project. boinc_client runs just fine if I run it from the terminal but not as a daemon. boincmgr gives a segmentation fault HELP! Many thanks, in advance, David Shaw PS - It was *much* easier doing this under Ubuntu :-) |

We will help you all we can, but you will have to ask Eric Myers if you want the best response.
My guess is that the installer failed to create the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file which contains the BOINC Manager password. I don't see the RPM you used advertised anywhere. Are you sure it is for public release? |

My guess is that the installer failed to create the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file which contains the BOINC Manager password. Yes. Right. That's *exactly* what I thought ;-) Means very little to me, I'm afraid :-) I don't see the RPM you used advertised anywhere. Are you sure it is for public release? I got it from another thread on these forums - the one here http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17805#145454 David |

Just checkin'.
Can you try with the verbose flag? In fact, use the flags Eric suggests: -Uhv If that doesn't help, send an email to Eric or install BOINC manually. |

Uninstall that rpm and grab 5.10.21. 5.10.29 seg faulted for a bunch of us. Eric just packed up the executables from the .sh from Berkeley and those were compiled specifically for *buntu although they seem to run on other systems.
