If your agent cannot connect to the server...

There are various reasons one might see the message about the agent not connecting. Aside from the obvious possibility that the computer was not actually connected to the internet, the next most common seems to be the software firewall setting. Try turning off your firewall software temporarily. Then minimize the agent with the arrow in the lower right and then bring it back up by double clicking on its icon in the tray at the lower right. This will make the agent try to connect again instead of waiting for its back-off period. If it works with the firewall off, you need to add a rule to the firewall to permit access to server.worldcommunitygrid.org and re-enable your firewall. Some firewalls have a learning mode. If yours does, you should set it to permit access from the agent software to the server site.

biggrin Re: If your agent cannot connect to the server...

OK I jump in. I have installed the client on 3 different computers. 2 of them work OK ( WINXP + SP2 ), 1 just doesn't want to..... After installing it, it connects to the server. It gets a workunit ( app 4.2MB ) but then it almost immediately tries to connect to the server again. This resulted in getting a new workunit, followed by the message ( sometimes instantly, sometimes after the client uses 100% CPU for about 1 minute) : Unable to connect to the GRID server. No way of getting this to work. I tried sofar to:
1) disable the firewall ( although it does get data from the server).
2) uninstall/reinstall ( was working with UD till today without problems).
3) reboot.
4) did some voodoo magic ( not really biggrin )

System specs:
1GB RAM
AMD Athlon 64
Plenty of harddisks
WinxP + SP2
Norton Internet security prof
EPOX 8KDA3+ MB

Any other suggestions? I have been running the UD client for quite some time on this installation without this problem. The other 2 computers in the same network ( home) work without problems.

Cheers, Peter.

Re: If your agent cannot connect to the server...

OK. Got it figured out. WinXP SP2 has a feature that is called Data Execution Prevention ( DEP ) that can be activated when running an Athlon64. By default it is set to "essential Windows programs and services only". Well, i had it set to "all programs and services". When i reverted to the first setting, the client worked OK.

Does this mean there is a problem in the client code? Or does it otherwise conflict with DEP?

Anyway, this will circumvent the problem for now.

Ciao, Peter.

I might have this problem too (I also have a AMD64 with winXPSP2). Ofcourse I opened all required ports, had my windows firewall turned off, but nothing helps...

Where did you change that setting?

on XP w/ SP2, it looks like in Control Panel -> System, Advanced Tab, Performance Settings, there is a Data Execution Prevention tab that has options duncan dame described.

Hi Joatmon,

that is where things should be changed indeed. Good luck all. Maybe this should be put in the known issues forum?

Peter.

Re: If your agent cannot connect to the server...

Hello everyone, I just signed up today, installed the software and run it. It appears that I have the same problem about the agent "unable to connect", but I was unable to solve it, even with all the tips you posted here. crying
I run it on a Pentium M 735, Windows XP (SP1), no firewall, 512 Mo RAM, AVP Kaspersky Antivirus.
Of course, I tried rebooting, reinstalling, and all the voodoo stuff but it doesn't help.

Where did I go wrong ?
Thank all of you in advance for the answers or tips you can provide.

Re: If your agent cannot connect to the server...

I had been having some trouble trying to load up the agent on a second machine, but kept getting errors/timeouts trying to register. Just now it was able to register, but now it won't download a work unit, I receive an error message from the WCG server.

Perhaps there is a problem on the server side, apparently a flood of new users signing up yesterday and today, maybe some of the problems us newbies are having are on the sever side.

Is there some web page that provides the current server status, something we can check when we have problems to see if it's us or the WCG servers?

Same here, I managed to register, but the first work package won't download.
I use a P2 with W98 on my old desktop at home.
No firewall, no viruscheck, no proxy, no LAN, just plain open DSL connection to the internet.
Tried restart, reboot, re-install, re-everything, no luck.
What can I do?
