Eso et al
----------------------------------------There's a big difference between all the things that impact us day by day and a Nuclear Accident All the things you describe have a local impact - a nuclear accident could have Global Impact Many of the things you describe we have no control over whatsoever But with Nuclear Power we do have decision to make and control over our combined destiny. Nuclear Power is only back on the Agenda because of the "Agenda" of Climate Change. How ironic if while trying alledgedly to save the Planet we inadvertently make large swathes of it uninhabitable. As I say a travesty Let's go with non radioactive solutions - there are many of them and they are viable with the investment that is currently going into Nuclear. Each of these long term environmentally friendly solutions will wean us off our Fossil Fuel Fetish in a progressive incremental manner. I'm sure all of those Algae and Green Plants could do with a puff of CO2 every now and again. We need a balanced future and that could even (heaven forbid ![]() Take care all Dave ![]() |

The reason why we don’t ban cars, is we are dependant on them. If you want to become dependant on nuclear as well, it only adds to the fire.
----------------------------------------The part you don’t get is we only have a choice of one or the other. While mankind still can justify war, the fragile nature of nuclear fuels cant fit in the picture. Realize this: Anyone, I mean anyone who thinks that the nuclear option is a way out of the greenhouse gas problem, is falling prey to what this thread is all about. Ignorance, politics & Hype. What I find personally amazing is Greenies trying to promote nuclear power in any way. As they are the antithesis of each other. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Let’s be afraid of anything and not try it. Let’s ban forks and knives and all human made tools (you can kill somebody with any tool). Let’s ban the city concept (it's a "man-made" dangerous place). Lets ban US, AS A DANGEROUS SPECIES!!!!
----------------------------------------Or better, lets not ban anything that helps us in making a better life for ourselves. Do you think that reverting to a pre-industrial life, things will be better? Before having powerful weapons and powerful communication, there was an era of violence because nobody was afraid with a man with sword. Now, when you see a policeman, you are thinking twice. Before there where castles and the army was everywhere to see. Today you see army only in movies and news. YOU DON'T NEED TO SEE IT ANYMORE IN ORDER TO BE AFRAID OF THE ARMY. The concept of powerful weapons, communications, food distribution chain, travelling, etc. made us a little less naive and I can actually say happy for more of us than just a hand of people (the aristocracy). Should we ban modern society? No. the answer is to be bold and try all the time new things. Nuclear power is here to stay. Let’s make it Fusion instead of Fission. Don't ban it because you are afraid of living. |

What really is worrying is the use of depleted uranium on the battlefield. That is simply not condonable. Depleted uranium may not be a great threat, but it is HIGHLY toxic. My Brothers firm makes special vacuum furnaces for that. Would be great if we did'nt need it, but if we want to stay on top we do. Too many lunatics in the world. BTW, I agree depleted uranium can be toxic. We have large stockpiles of this material and I dont see us running out anytime soon. If a relatively inexpensive supply of an equally dense material was available to produce the alloys, I would prefer that and be all for it. Better still , I would prefer it if we needed neither. |

Go on courine tell em
----------------------------------------It's ridiculous the Green Movement embracing Nuclear Power like it is the saviour of Mankind. What happened ????? At which point did the Greenies turn up to have their brains sucked out? How is it possible to have environmentally friendly and nuclear power in the same sentence? Here's how This is an extract from "the other thread" It's Gordon Brown (Our Prime Minister) introducing the Governments decision to allow new Nuclear Power Stations to be built on the green and pleasant land that is England and Wales (Scotland has declared NO WAY) ------- A white paper on Nuclear Power January 2008 http://nuclearpower2007.direct.gov.uk/docs/WhitePaper.pdf Note how the the paper opens with a foreword from the Prime Minister it starts.... Climate Change is quite simply the biggest challenge facing humanity. The latest report from the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change leaves little doubt that human activity, and in particular greenhouse-gas emissions, is changing the world’s climate, with potentially devastating consequences. But we have choices and decisions to make about how we move towards a low-carbon economy. Note the opening 2 words were not Nuclear Power Have a read of this if you are interested in environmental issues http://www.bellona.org/filearchive/fil_sellaengweb.pdf Night Dave ![]() |

Oh hehe, I love this one.
----------------------------------------Want to know how they make a depleted uranium round or armor? It isn't U-238 that is depleted. Now who else wants the answer to the "turn off tech or let us have our way" bandwagon. Its a story I have known since before 1978. ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by courine at Feb 1, 2008 9:12:40 PM] |

Perhaps we should abandon all biological research, because people can learn from it and make better biological weapons. Stop all airplanes, because of 9/11! Destroy all computers, because we might create hostile AI! Ban tall buildings! Chemical plants! Sharp edges!! Let's go back to the pre-industrial era! ![]() Thats where those idiot greenies want to put us |

About 8 people per year are killed by shovels. Let's ban those as well, and dig with our hands.

It has been proposed elsewhere to make coins out of small radioactive slugs. That gives another meaning to "burning a hole in your pocket".
----------------------------------------That would encourage you to spend them instead of letting them pile up at home in fruit jars. hot-potato ... hot-potato ... keep those coins moving to improve the economy.
