I've tried to search for as many of these questions as I can, so I am sorry if you've already answered these before. If there are other threads you know of that answer my question exactly, feel free to copy and paste the URL as an answer to save time.
1) Because I only have my computer on when I am using it, I sometimes miss deadlines. However, I have found that if I continue to let it run until it finishes, sometimes 2 days after the deadline, I still get credit for it despite the fact that the computer keeps urging me to abort the task. I learned through reading the other FAQs that the leftover work goes to "reliable" hosts. If I see that a deadline is approaching (90%+), I will leave my computer on to finish it. How much time after the deadline do I have before the work is passed to someone else? Is it better to abort it at the deadline and let someone else finish it or finish it myself? 2) Does the grid operate in the standby mode? 3) I read the thread (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11332) on viewing checkpoints saved in the BOINC folder. Like the example picture in the thread, mine will show the last checkpoint time for all of the checkpoints. Is there a way to see when the checkpoint before that was saved so I can get an idea of what the time intervals between saves are? 4) I want to make sure I am maximizing the work my computer does, since I only have it on when I am using it. I have a Core Duo (1.66GHz). I've messed around with the preferences, so that it uses more hard drive space than the default. I am not sure how much I can dedicate to Boinc w/o it slowing down whatever programs I am using. I only use my computer for the internet and Microsoft Office and occasionally movies, but never any games. What preferences setting would you suggest I set? Thanks so much for your help! |

1) It can vary. Try not to rely on this. You may want to choose projects with shorter work units.
2) No. 3) As shown in that thread, you can log checkpoints to check their frequency. Bear in mind that the frequency is not a constant. 4) Go here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...iguration.do?name=Default and select "Maximum Output". That setting is suitable for someone who only runs WCG while they are using their computer. |

Hi malee22!
----------------------------------------If I were you I would select the DDDT project only and check the box allowing to send other projects in case of DDDT WUs shortage. The pros: - These jobs would need about 3 hours of your machine to complete - They will checkpoint about every 2 minutes, which means that you will never lose more than this amount of work when you decide to switch off. At this rate you won't even need to take care of checkpoints. The cons: - The time given to run them is 7 days only but if you use your computer every day that should not be a problem because of the pros above. - You might not like this project which is perfectly OK. However a large number of users run all projects and for those users the servers balance the projects to have all of them progressing fairly. For this reason all DDDT jobs that you will process are DDDT jobs that will not need to be dispatched to "all-projects" users and the net result will be the same, more or less. What do you think? Jean. |

The DDDT share has been trending down quite a bit for weeks and weeks and barely getting 9 CPU years yesterday and 61k of short work units. The big benefactor of WCG growth seems to be FA@H.
----------------------------------------Yesterday: Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 8:250:23:28:03 Points Generated 5,569,484 Results Returned 61,442 Added: Not even 4% of total production of 208 CPU years and no indication at all that there is work shortage to Discover Dengue Drugs - Together.

Remember, DDDT is going to ramp up soon with larger work units. Has this not happened? I only run DDDT intermittently.

Intermittently indeed, on the all project machine only get 1 in 20 or so.
----------------------------------------No, they have been getting shorter though recollect a Tech wrote that WCG were going to extend the unit run times. The Phase 2 I still understand as it going to run concurrently with phase 1 continuing. Maybe, the body of work is what was being sized down given the concern it would run for years and it now being slowed down to in fact just end when phase 2 begins.... it's not clear to me with with Dr.Watowich being utterly silent. Wondered for a moment if there was a bandwidth game, but the sizes are small and given near 400 thousand work units / day were handled regularly a few weeks ago, we're quite below proven WU volume capacity. We'll see.... the lappy is now on an exclusive Dengue diet to pump up the chance to get into the top 2000 rankings overall.... 2021 yesterday ![]()

Malee22,
I would also recommend that you change the setting in your profile for Workunit Cache Settings -> Connect to network about every and set this to 0.01 instead of the 0.3. This will reduce the amount of time that you have a workunit 'cached' on your computer but not yet being run. thanks, Kevin |

Didactylos: I just put it on maximum output. I didn't even know it existed!
----------------------------------------knreed: I'm not sure where to find this "work unit cache settings." Please advise. Thanks everyone for your help and input! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 17, 2008 4:04:17 PM] |

Hit the Custom Profile Button to get all the options. Somewhere down is the 'cache' option.
----------------------------------------knreed, It occurred to me that it would be nice to always see all active projects listed on the Preset Profiles summary screen, before any BOINC customization options. This way, people wont have to open up the Customize screen to make their choice of what to contribute to.
