Memory Use

Hi all, I hope this is the correct forum. A process called "wcg_hpf2_rosetta_5.18_windows_intel86" is sat in memory all the time, I realise it is a process that should be there, but it does seem to be using 45MB of RAM. I thought it would be "low footprint" while I am using the PC, which it is in terms of CPU use. Seems a lot to me while the program is not even running (i.e. while I'm using the PC) I'm running 32 bit Vista Ultimate.

Thanks.

Re: Memory Use

BOINC has a setting for this. Generally, you will get better performance if you allow BOINC to keep the process in memory.

If you have a reason for not wanting that, then simply change your preferences (My Grid -> Device Manager).

Re: Memory Use

It's a bit of a debate of what it should and should not, but 45mb is really not allot on a Vista Ultimate, probably with 2 or 4gb RAM. When 'Leave in Memory' is not set to on, BOINC pauses work when the machine is in use, that is if you've set it to only work when idle and keeps it inRAM as-is. If LIM is *not* on and Vista needs that space for other processes, it would store the job into the Swap file on disk for immediate availability. Why it does not unload completely is, because if it did it would loose processing time since the last checkpoint save AND if a big job, take substantial time to fetch from disk. Vista is though rather smart and can tell you that on my 4 core Vista HP with 2gb ram i truly do not notice the 4 jobs simultaneously running while using the computer.

cheers

Thanks, and to Didactylos. I think I need to upgrade, although this machine uses Rambus, there is just one gig. Thanks again.
