Four core processor

I have just installed a new machine with intel core2 Quad processor and 3 gig of memory. This is recognised by the boincstats as a four processor machine. I had expected that it would run four work units at a time, but it is running only two. Is this right, or should I be doing something in the setup? Level of boinc is the one currently on the download website.

Re: Four core processor

The scheduler doesn't always give work for every core in the first scheduler request. Give it some time.

There are preferences that affect cores used, but we'll try waiting first :-)

Re: Four core processor

The first request is standard 1 second of work, even if initial attaching the 'fetch no work' button is operated before the request. Maybe this minimum is done to establish if successfully work is downloaded without queuing up more jobs which then would sit there biding time?

Re: Four core processor

Strangely Boincstats gives this as a 4 CPU machine, but the benchmark says that is a two processor machine. Both are right, as I understand that the cpu has two processors with two cores in each. It is very fast, but I still wonder if it could be faster still with all four cores working?

I should add that it is downloading plenty of work - as of this moment two running and two ready to report!

Re: Four core processor

Check up in your device profile how many 'processors' are permitted. New devices have a default of up to 16. The BOINC client version 5.10 allows to also set the number of processors locally. 2 dual cores would need an entry of 4 processors. After the change is effectuated a new benchmark should take place.

No it wont go faster. You will just process 4 jobs in parallel when BOINC becomes aware.

Re: Four core processor

This may be a stupid question - but have you checked that Windows can use all 4 cores?

Re: Four core processor

My quad core computer starts with two work units on a new installation. It picks up two more jobs when the computer is restarted, BOINC is restarted, or when I click on Update in BOINC Manager | Projects tab after a period of running. It will also start running four tasks after one of the first work units has been completed. Maybe one of the programmers can explain why, but this behavior is what I have observed.

Re: Four core processor

Vester, it's most likely that initial 1 second work request which yields minimum work to test the waters (see my 1st post). Like you observe the next request is for all. On my 4 core its identical. The difference though that it is immediately identified as a 4 core CPU.

Well done, sir. After some difficulty in tracking down the default device profile I found that it only allowed two processors. After altering this the machine is now busily doing more work.

I realise that it is no faster - this was careless wording. But hopefully if it is doing four jobs at once it will do more work!

Anyway, many thanks.
