Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Hello Katheryn, jal2, and all,

I know OS/2 and DOS better than Linux, so excuse me if I show real ignorance, but here are the steps I have taken to install Boinc and to connect to WCG:

(1) Downloaded boinc from WCG (which I downloaded into my home directory (ie default);
(2) Started terminal (ie system, terminal, konsole, and found myself in the default directory;
(3) executed the following command: chmod 700 (name of boinc file);
(4) executed the following command to install programme: ./(name of boinc file);
(5) executed the following command to move into the BOINC directory: cd BOINC;
(6) Connected to WCG by executing the following command:
./boinc -attach_project
www.worldcommunitygrid.org dedbec5d6704926c19ed6edcc82b3009

(7) then, to see the activity, I started the boinc manager to bring up the non-terminal KDE view by first changing directory to the lowest directory by executing the cd .. command until I was at the equivalent to the DOS root directory;
(8) I then executed the following command to bring up the non-terminal view: cd ../home/(user's directory)/BOINC $$ exec ./boincmgr $@

So, at this point, I have BOINC running. However, what will happen when I close it down tonight (my computer is noisy and keeps me up, hence I turn it off at night) I do not know. On my old linux system I could start up the machine in the morning and continue on (when I started linux the command prompt would reappear and could simply select the last command by pressing up arrow and pressing enter to restart boinc - and it would restart at the place I logged off at.)

I'll let the machine run a few hours and then restart & let you know whether the checkpoint kicked in. (I don't know how to set the checkpoint).

Many thanks for the patience and help.

Mark

congratulation Mark.
Checkpoints are automatically written by Boinc, and hopefully should occur when you issue the shutdown command.
If you would like, I will post a link to a script you can use to have Boinc automatically start & stop itself when you start & stop the computer.

They are not issued by a BOINC shutdown command. The science periodically initiates those at convenient points. Some checkpoints are very frequent, some are depending on speed 30 minutes to an hour and longer apart. For seeing and choosing the best moment to exit the client or shut down the computer with least computing time loss, read the 'Checkpoint Saving FAQ in the the Start Here forum.

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Hello, all,

I've reinstalled my new version of Linux (10.3) and Boinc a number of times but each time I need to start 2 instances of boinc by way of the command line to connect to my account. Hummmm.

So, I am returning to my earlier system and hunkering down to figure out how to install Boinc on SuSE 10.3 in the most successful way. Even if I cannot set a script (a luxury) I hope to replicate my original installation so that I can, at least, restart Boinc each time I log on by entering a simple command at the command line.

Thanks to Kathryn for her valiant and super help.

And, as said by Douglas MacArthur, the great US general (ignoring his slight problems in the Korean war), I shall return (hopefully if I can create a successful SuSE install with auto script). ;)
