Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Hello,

I replaced my PC. I am unable to figure out how to install Boinc and get it running properly. Previously, I was able to start Boinc through the command line command: /home/username/boinc && exec ./boincmgr $@

I have installed BOINC into its own directory and run it from there, but when I re-boot all of the boinc work is lost. In my old system, I could close the system and when rebooted I could restart Boincmgr and the computation would commence without loss.

Now, when I shut down the system, all my work is lost.

I have reviewed lots of directions to install Boinc but they all fail.

Does anyone know how to install BOINC for WCG on Suse 10.3?

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Mark

Are you letting it checkpoint?

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

why don't you install Boinc as a service, and let SuSE stop and start the service as part of a reboot? There are multiple installation approaches documented, although I've settled into using /home/boinc/BOINC location for the run-time directory instead of copying pieces all over the place (makes it easier to upgrade). I seem to remember hearing that someone finally created an Boinc RPM which does the setup for you, but I don't know where to find it.

edit:
I just found your other thread.
Did you try the service approach?
If so, make sure you go into the run-level editor and check the entry for Boinc, as SuSE will sometimes want to install, or activate, other functionality to ensure things are working correctly.

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Hello Jal2 and Didactylos,

Many thanks for the replies. I am only now learning about checkpoint. How is the checkpoint save time set?

Jal2, how do you install as a service? (sorry for my ignorance) And is this the same as a Daemon? Sorry, again for not knowing the difference.

I've located a SpyHill paper on the net and will see if I can learn something from it. Unfortunately, it is not very clear (eg it does not describe how to connect to WCG). At any rate, I'll try to find something on installing as a service and see if I can make any headway.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

service vs Daemon: I suspect it matters what system you primarily work on (Win vs *nix), as I think they are effectively the same (a Daemon is a service, but I'm not sure a service is always a Daemon).

It's been about six months since my last install, but this link seems to be what I used. I started with the SuSE 9.2 script and made an update to deal with the orphan lock table most people seem to have. My solution is "primitive", but effective (if the Daemon is running, then you can't delete the lock table. But, if you can delete the lock table ....).
There are many other links with more recent solutions, such as Wiki: installing Boinc on Linux, but most are for Red Hat instead of SuSE. I don't know if the link Lawrence provided in the other thread was useful.

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Mark,

I've worked with Eric (who runs the spyhill site) on making the documentation clearer for less experienced Linux users. But I think you're right, the site does assume some familiarity with how BOINC Manager works.

You can find Eric's RPM at

http://pirates.spy-hill.net/download/RPMS/

And you can find install information at

http://pirates.spy-hill.net/help/linux-rpm.html

If you don't have BOINC currently install or you can undo your current install, it's even easier than what is written in the instructions. Download the rpm to your desktop and double click it. I found that started the install process on my Fedora 7 machine.

And if you have any suggestions on how to make the help pages clearer, you can contact me at kathryn dot boinc at gmail dot com.

Hi jal2,

could you please explain/post the update you made to the script (or the modified script itself, I think i could figure it out myself...) ?
Would be extremely nice as i'm also searching for a proper solution tu run boinc under Suse.

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Many thanks, JAL2 and Kathryn, for the informative replies.

I will work with the SpyHill documents and a few other documents to boil down the steps needed for a fresh install of BOINC on SuSE 10.3. If I am successful, I will pass on the information with a view to clarifying the steps set out in the Spyhill work.

Wish me luck.

Regards,
Mark

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

I added an if to the Boinc service script which attempts to delete any existing lock file. If the delete fails, then the service is still running. Ideally, I would have used a 'ps | grep boinc' sequence to checked to see if the Boinc service was running, but this approach was easier at the time.

case "$1" in
start)
cd $BOINCDIR

## start new
if [ -f lockfile ] ; then
echo "The BOINC client is attempting to clean up the lock file."
rm lockfile
fi
##end new

if [ -f lockfile ] ; then
echo -n "Another instance of BOINC is running (lockfile exists)."
echo_failure
echo
exit 4
fi

Re: Okay - I give up - BOINC install on SuSE

Would it be a good idea to compare the Debian and FreeBSD ports? Neither of those have lockfile problems.
