Hello,
is it possible that I can get smaller workpackages? with the default 60% cpu I am loosing half of my points, because the workpackages are not finished on time. That is a waste of resources. I am using my laptop for my work, so it is running on average for some 7 hours per day, I reckon this should be enough for normal production...? with this waist percentage I hesitate recommending WCG to others. I suggest offering the possibility of requesting smaller workpackages or longer periods of time to process the packages. with kind regards, Henk Koning |

Even at seven hours a day, you ought to have no trouble finishing work units by the deadline. Is your computer very old?
I'm afraid there are some computers where it simply isn't efficient to run World Community Grid. Give us some more figures, and maybe we can offer some more helpful advice. |

You could stick to DDDT for now, which are relatively small workunits in comparison to the other projects.

Thanks for your reply.
I am running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Latitude X1 laptop, 1.1 GHz, 1.2GB RAM. |

That should have no trouble with the deadlines.
If you find you are turning your computer off frequently and losing progress that way, then try hibernation instead. |

Running BOINC or UD agent? Seeing the 60% cpu default makes me think of UD.
----------------------------------------If you are running UD then switch to BOINC and select in your profile to only work DDDT (Discovering Dengue Drugs Together). You can't run DDDT on the UD agent. One of those DDDT workunits should finish within the 7 or so hours you have your computer on per day. I think the newer faster computers finish them in as little as 30 minutes. A 1GHz machine should have one workunit done in around 4 hours at 100% CPU. Thanks for your replies. I am running BOINC. I cannot remember whether the 60% was chosen by the installation or by me ... ;-). I have set it to 100% and this seems to speed up the packages considerably, without hampering the use of my laptop at all. I also set my profile to 'only DDDT'. lets see what this will result into for a couple of days.
Thanks again. HK. |

Things seem to be running smoothly now. So we can close this issue. Thanks for the comments.

general observation:
----------------------------------------Some laptops can handle 100% and some cannot without heat buildup. If you're running, great. Part of the ones that cannot can be improved by (1) elevating it on an open metal rack so air can get in (2) buying one of those cooling pads that have a couple of fans in them or (3) opening some drawers so that the air can get OUT.

I have a Lenovo T60P laptop which I can run at 100% if the following conditions are met:
1. Ambient temperature is 70 degrees F or below 2. An optional product call tpfancontrol is used to run the fan on max all the time. If I take the laptop into a warmer environment I will reduce the CPU% to 90 or 80. There have been a few occasions when I was running the laptop in the car with the windows open and the temperature around 80, fan on max, CPU% set to 90% and the machine locked up. The bottom line for the T60P is that the cooler the temperature around the laptop is and with the fan on max, then I can achieve a 100% CPU setting without problems. |
