Hello fellow chrunchers ;)
I'm just wondering if there will be some improvement in the graphichal representations of WCG projects like proteome folding or fight aids at home? I like the graphics for folding but it's running in a small window and can't be set on full screen mode, furthermore it's not using T&L or dx9.x which is a real shame considering today's graphics capabilities of even the cheapest graphic cards. It would be really swell if some newer versions of client would come with incorporated nice & smooth 3d gfx for full screen viewing. Any comments on that? P.S. The f@h for PS3 looks pretty good and I'm sure the modern PCs should not fall too far behind that in the visual aspect at least. |

Hi Davor Izakovic,
The original graphics for HPF2 in 2004 on the UD client (Windows) looked good, as did the graphics for FAAH on the same platform in 2005. The graphics for BOINC have been much less attractive, yet they have been the source of endless difficulties. The graphics framework for the upcoming BOINC 6 is being changed, but I think that multi-platform, multi-OS graphics will always be far behind what is possible on a single platform (Windows) with a lot of supporting software tools. I think that we have very little time left over from making the projects work to develop good graphics. Too bad! ![]() Maybe I should pretend that good graphics are a foolish waste of effort? ![]() But maybe somebody will develop some glitzy graphics for a BOINC project that everybody can copy and adapt for each new project. ![]() (Look over all the BOINC projects. Which do you think are showing good graphics ideas?) Lawrence |

(Look over all the BOINC projects. Which do you think are showing good graphics ideas?) I've seen a few very interesting BOINC graphics. The malaria project is one of the most unusual. You can rotate the plane in x y z directions to see your relief map better. How is it shadowed? by the sun and moon whizzing around a planetoid, the rendered field of which you are above. You get sunrises/sets and moonrises/sets. For good measure, some flying mosquitoes are buzzing around for you to swat away. The phases of the moon don't change, but that is an acceptable compromise. I like Rosetta/Ralph for their vector graphics treatment and dynamic molecule movement, settling in on a low-energy form. One phase shows a line graph. Another phase shows 2 line graphs in x and y direction, and an intersection box. The rotating celestial sphere in Einstein is educational. The rotating earth in the continental simulation can show clouds, rain/snow, or pressure. It's a nice way to follow a very long running workunit. I liked the old docking graphics in grid.org before they stopped doing useful work, because it showed actual renditions of different chemical molecules, either in stick or 3-d form. Can't you get Oxford to come over here, now?
