...or do you even cook? Mind you, I don't mean unwrapping and zapping, either. I'm referring to real ingredients, pots and pans, and a heat source.
If you do, do you find the internet is a valuable source of recipes, or do you prefer books, or even family recipes older than time itself? I am myself something of an amateur chef, and sometimes brewer, and I'm always changing a recipe to "improve" it (though that result is more of a hope than a guarantee!) or even creating my own recipe on a taste from a restaurant, or an ingredient found in a store. I find myself curious as to what other crunchers do when their computers are crunching and they want to munch... If you have an interest, feel free to stop in the HomeBrewers team thread (Eat, Drink, and Be Crunching) and browse through for a very wide variety of recipes of solid, as well as liquid sustenance, some of them my original recipes, posted in among the messages. Holding up a hand here, yes, I like to cook and will usually make-up a recipe as I go along, gaining inspiration from whatever fresh ingredients happen to be available at the time. Usually I have a pretty good idea about the things which will go well together and those which are likely to be a disaster .... although "surprises" can happen occasionally ...
---------------------------------------- I have an awful lot of recipe books, collected over the years, but I mostly use them for ideas rather than following recipes line by line and the internet can be a very useful place to look if I'm curious about an ingredient, or seeking a bit of advice. I've just spent a while browsing your Team thread (bad idea at this time of night, because it has made me feel hungry now,) Mmmm, you and your team-mates have posted some very tasty-sounding recipes, the acorn squash and beer soup sounded very appealing, as did the Brie recipe ....oh dear ... must go in search of a quick snack methinks! I love epicurious.com - recipes from Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazines, all rated by users with comments. I've made some fantastic recipes from the site (only the highly-rated ones of course), which always impress family members & friends.
----------------------------------------Sometimes though, I like to pull out the trusty cookbooks (like Dean & Deluca, Larousse Gastronomique, or the Professional Chef). It's always fun to come up with something on a whim though - just grabbing some fresh produce & picking a meat and whipping up something new & creative. I've found recently upon looking for certain recipes on the Net, that even though there are half a dozen or more sites with a given recipe title, they're all copied from each other! It makes me wonder who had it first, and why someone figured another site needed the same thing all over again. Well now, a snack sounds like a good idea.. It's two hours until lunch...Cheers FB |

Yes, Epicurious has a lot of well tested recipes, and a lot of unique ones, too. have you ever looked at Cooks Illustrated mag? I like it because it has no ads, they go through each recipe, preparation, equipment, or ingredient test, or even commercial product reviews, to an extreme. Sometimes though, I like to pull out the trusty cookbooks (like Dean & Deluca, Larousse Gastronomique, or the Professional Chef). I love the Larousse! Cheers FB |
