Excessive Hard Drive activity

Hello

I have a little problem with my Boinc since 2 or 3 days : my hard drive is in permanent activity and it make much more noise than before. If I stop the Boinc agent, the hard drive stop this excessive activity.

I tried to defragment, no change after that.

I don't think this problem is linked to a particular project, the HD activity is excessive with all projects ...

My computer is a P4D with 2 Go Ram. It's the first time I encounter this kind of problem. I also tried to change some parameters in Boinc - no changes.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Excessive Hard Drive activity

is your P4D a HT processor? if so, change the parameter for the processors from 16 to 1! 'cause the BOINC doesn't work well with the emulated dual procs...

also that will get your RAM consumtion down!

what OS do you use?

Re: Excessive Hard Drive activity

Sorry I don't know what is a HT processor. It's not a "real" dual core, that's all I know. It's able to calculate 2 WU at the same time.

I change the CPU parameter from 16 to 1 ...

I'm under Xp.

The strange thing is I have BOINC since 8 months, and it's the 1st time I have this hard drive problem ...

Thanks for your help ;)

EDIT : with CPU parameter at 1, only WU at the same time, but the hard drive is now perfectly silent ;) thank you ;)

Re: Excessive Hard Drive activity

Hello Exar Kun [HoloNet],
My guess is that you were running more than 1 work unit at the same time. This adds hundreds of megabytes to the memory being used. If your physical memory is not large enough, then your computer starts using your hard drive as virtual memory.

Even though everything is fine, I suggest you look at the Useful Utilities thread ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 ) and download Belarc Advisor at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html which will look over your system and produce an informative description.

Re: Excessive Hard Drive activity

Exar, the HT processor means it has the HyperThreading option on the proc, which means it can emulate the 2cores...

and the BOINC doesn't like the emulated cores - gives back errors or invalid results! so cruch one at a time...

also, the result will be finished much earlier, 'cause the cruching will be run in RAM instead of HDD swap file...

Re: Excessive Hard Drive activity

I disabled Hyper-threading back when I had a P4. I went into the BIOS when the computer started up and disabled hyper-threading that way. I actually got more performance out of my most commonly used applications with less errors.

I prefer 2 real cores on a processor much more then I ever did having an extra virtual core(hyper-threading).

Re: Excessive Hard Drive activity

Thank you for your help, I will try to change my virtual memory parameters to see if it can change something. I haven't any invalid calcul in the past 6 or 8 months, so I prefer to calculate 2 WUs instead of 1 ^^ (if I can ^^).

Have a nice day ;)
