Installing Boinc in Ubuntu

Hi Folks,

I'm running Ubuntu Linux 7.10 both 64 and 32 bit and also Boinc 5.10.8. I've checked the Synaptic Package Manager and this is still the "latest" version available in the repositories.

So, if I download the latest version of Boinc from Berkley, where do I (manually) install the package in Ubuntu so it replaces the older Boinc in the system. (I know I can install it in a user created directory, but if I put it where the system puts it, it will continue working with the work units I already have.)

Hopefully this makes sense.

Re: Installing Boinc in Ubuntu

comment on Windows; It is BOINC in Windows Vista that doesn't work when the install puts BOINC into the regular Vista program directory. BOINC should be put into a separate directory in that case.

Normally, BOINC will or should overwrite the previous version.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Ubuntu message...

Re: Installing Boinc in Ubuntu

If you want to do it the easiest way, just grab the latest version from the GetDeb site. Download the version you want and install the .deb file and it should replace the old version.

http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=Boinc

If you want to do it in a more difficult manner, let me know and I can type up some instructions.

Re: Installing Boinc in Ubuntu

Thanks BotCat13 for the offer of typing up some difficult route to installing the latest Boinc. I took your suggested easy route and it's worked. I'm a bit new to Ubuntu and when first new used to download and install the suggested WCG way and end up with an install in a user directory.

And to Retsof: luckily I don't run Windoze anymore and what a relief I tell you!

Thanks to both
